멀리 떨어진 러시아 예쿠치야(Якутия) 공화국의 두 도시 탐토르스키(Томторский)와 오이미콘(Оймякон)이 겨울철 기온이 영하 71℃까지 내려가, 지구상에서 가장 추운 거주 지역(最寒居住地域)의 명칭(名稱)을 위해 경쟁한다. 이지역은 명성의 또 다른 주장이 있다. 추위를 견딜 수있는 뛰어난 능력을 가진 희귀한 토종(土種), 때로는 단순히 예쿠트로 알려진 예쿠트 말의 고향이다. 이 사진들은 기온이 영하 55℃ 아래로 내려가는 그들의 겨울 서식지(冬季棲息地)에서 튼튼한 말을 보여준다.
Two towns in the remote Russian republic of Yakutia, Tomtor and Oymyakon, compete for the title of the coldest inhabited place on Earth, with winter temperatures reaching as low as minus 71 degrees Celsius. The region has another claim to fame as well; it’s the home of the Yakut horse, sometimes known simply as the Yakut, a rare native breed with an exceptional ability to withstand the cold. These photos show the hardy horses in their winter habitat as temperatures dipped down to minus 55 degrees.

4. Yakut horses are well-adapted to the extreme cold. One of their traits is the ability to find vegetation to graze on under the deep snow.

8. 오이미콘(Оймякон)은 러시아의 사하 공화국 오이미콘스키 지역에 위치한 작은 마을로써, 인디기르카江 상류 분지에 위치한다. 마을은 2000m급인 세 개의 산맥에 둘러싸여 북극에서 내려온 찬 공기가 머무르며 매우 추운 기후를 만들어 낸다. 겨울철에는 영하 70℃까지 떨어져 남극을 제외한 세계의 한극(寒極)이라고 불린다. 1926년 1월 26일 영하 71.2℃를 기록, 남극을 제외한 인간이 거주 중인 곳 중 세계에서 가장 낮은 기온으로 기록되었다.

Tomtor is a small town situated inside the "Pole of the Cold", the world's coldest inhabited place, where the January's average temperature is -50 degrees centigrades. I visit the old gold mine where nice ice sculptures are kept, and an hot spring where most water never freezes.
탐토르(Томтор)는 1월 평균 기온이 영하 50℃이며, 세계에서 가장 추운 사람이 거주하는 곳으로, "한극(寒極)"에 위치한 작은 마을이다. 나는 멋진 얼음 조각이 그대로있는 금광과 대부분의 물이 결코 얼지 않는 온천을 방문하였다.

Photos of Tomtor. A stream that never freezes, because of hot springs. The vapour, coming out continuously, freezes instantly over the trees all around, creating very bizzarre shapes.
톰토르(Томтор)의 사진들. 온천(溫泉)이기 때문에 하천은 결코 얼지 않는다. 수증기(水蒸氣)는 계속 나오고, 주위의 모든 나무들이 곧바로 얼어버려 매우 기괴한 모습을 하고 있다.
