Taxes
Several times the word "taxes" were mentioned in "The Matrix." Overall, a tax is a payment of money or performance of services for the government to use. This is yet another reminder that those in the matrix are paying the ultimate tax to their government--the matrix. They are paying with their very lives.
The references to taxes were also subtle reminders to that fact that those trapped in the matrix are enslaved, "paying" more than they realize.
Paying taxes symbolizes life in the matrix and not knowing the truth.
Agent Smith: "In one life, you are Thomas A. Anderson [...] you pay your taxes..."
Morpheus: "You can feel it when you [...] pay your taxes..."
Neo: "*The* Trinity? That cracked the IRS d-base?"

세금이란 단어는 영화에서 일부분에만 언급되는 느낌이 있긴 하다. 하지만 세금의 정의를 되새겨 보자. 세금이란 정부가 사용하도록 국민이 제공하는 대가이다. 매트릭스에 통제되는 인간들은 어떠한가. 꿈나라의 생활을 제공받는 대가로 그들의 생명을 통째로 바치고 있다. 세금이란 언제나 부담스러운 것이어서 공평하다고 느껴지지 않는 법이다.
세금의 존재를 인정하는 것은 아직도 매트릭스 안에 있음을 뜻한다.
스미스 요원이 네오에게 심문할 적에 말한다.
"... 떳떳한 시민으로서 세금도 내고..."
모피어스가 네오와 처음 만났을 때에 말한다.
"출근할 때도 느껴지고... 세금을 낼 때도... "
네오가 트리니티를 처음 만났을 때에 그가 IRS를 해킹한 것을 말하면서 은근히 칭찬한다. IRS는 정부 전체를 상징하는 기관인 것이다.
