The "Alice In Wonderland" Parallels

Note: The book "Alice In Wonderland" was written by Lewis Carroll. It actually contains two stories. The first one is titled "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and the second one is called "Through The Looking-Glass." The recent "Alice In Wonderland" movie on television combined aspects of both stories together.

In "The Matrix," the two stories in "Alice In Wonderland" are alluded to in many ways and on different levels. The directors (who are big fans of the book) did so because they wanted to help convey the fact that the Matrix is a lot like Wonderland: crazy, surreal, and illogical. Here are some examples:
"이상한 나라의 앨리스"는 다양한 방법과 각도로 매트릭스에서 표현된다. 감독이 의도는 매트릭스가 이상한 나라처럼 제정신이 아니고 초현실적이고 비논리적인 세계라는 사실을 표현하고 싶었기 때문이다. 예로서,
Morpheus refers directly to Alice falling down the rabbit hole into Wonderland TWICE in different statements: "I imagine right now you're feeling a bit like Alice, tumbling down the rabbit hole?" and "You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes."

Rabbits are also seen again in the matrix, this time on a tv screen, when Neo enters the Oracles's living room

There is also a "late meeting" similarity as well regarding the rabbits in both movies. Choi is two hours late meeting Neo and Choi blames Dujour for it, while the rabbit in Wonderland pulls out his pocket watch and tells Alice "Oh, dear! Oh, dear! I shall be too late."

In Wonderland Alice finds various bottles and food items that have notes attached with the words "drink me" or "eat me." When she does so, her body physically changes dramatically. In "The Matrix," Neo is offered a choice between two different pills. The result of his decision greatly affects his physical body as well. In addition, the Oracle offers Neo a cookie, telling him that after he eats it, he'll feel "right as rain" and Cypher offers Neo a drink.

In Wonderland Alice asks a cheshire cat for directions while a "deja vu" black cat crosses Neo's path. Neo also asks for directions while in the matrix.

In Wonderland Alice nearly drowns in a pool of her own tears. While in the matrix sewer system, Neo barely stays afloat until the crew rescues him.

Both of Alice's trips, one to Wonderland and the other to the Looking-Glass world, occur while she is sleeping. Neo is sleeping while he is in the matrix simulated world.

Alice enters the Looking-Glass world through a mirror that magically becomes fluid-like so she can climb into it. As Alice tells her kitten:

In "The Matrix" Neo enters the real world after being consumed by a mirror which, like Alice's mirror, appeared normal at first but then took on a fluid-like property.
앨리스처럼 매트릭스에서 네오도 거울을 통해 현실세계로 온다. 거울은 처음에 정상으로 보였으나 나중에 액체처럼 녹아내렸다.
In the Looking-Glass world everything is backwards, including a book that Alice tries to read. This is because everything is appears reversed or backwards when viewed in a mirror. As for "The Matrix," the code is made up mostly of backwards Katana letters. (Katana is a form of Japanse writing.)

In "The Matrix," Agent Smith points out that Neo is actually two people--Neo and Thomas A. Anderson. In Chapter 1 of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," Alice ponders a similar dual-personality concept: "But it's no use now to pretend to be two people! Why, there's hardly enough of me left to make ONE respectable person!"

In "The Matrix" all of the characters names (as well as many symbols and concepts) have double, sometimes even multiple meanings. According to the Wachowski brothers, this was intentional. While in the Looking-Glass world, Alice has a conversation about word meanings with Humpty Dumpty:

While in the Looking-Glass world, Alice considers going into the woods where things have no names. "I wonder what'll become of MY name when I go in? I shouldn't like to lose it at all--because they'd have to give me another, and it wold be almost certain to be an ugly one." Once she is the woods, Alice does find herself unable to remember who she is. As Alice says, "Then it really HAS happened, after all! And now, who am I? I WILL remember, if I can! I'm determined to do it!"

앨리스는 토끼를 쫓아가다가 토끼굴에 빠진다. 그리고 이상한 나라에서 나중에 만나게 된다. 매트릭스에서 네오는 '흰토끼를 쫓아가라'는 말에 따라 두주어를 따라 나이트클럽에 가서는 혼자 서성이는 꼴이 된다. 네오는 나중에 오라클의 아파트에 있는 TV에서 토끼를 다시 만난다.
There is also a "late meeting" similarity as well regarding the rabbits in both movies. Choi is two hours late meeting Neo and Choi blames Dujour for it, while the rabbit in Wonderland pulls out his pocket watch and tells Alice "Oh, dear! Oh, dear! I shall be too late."
'약속에 늦었다'는 공통점도 있다. 초이는 네오와의 약속에 늦었는데 두주어 때문이라고 변명한다. "이상한 나라의 앨리스"에서 토끼는 연신 시계를 꺼내보면서 '늦었다'고 말하며 뛰어 다닌다.
In Wonderland Alice finds various bottles and food items that have notes attached with the words "drink me" or "eat me." When she does so, her body physically changes dramatically. In "The Matrix," Neo is offered a choice between two different pills. The result of his decision greatly affects his physical body as well. In addition, the Oracle offers Neo a cookie, telling him that after he eats it, he'll feel "right as rain" and Cypher offers Neo a drink.
앨리스는 여러가지 약병이나 케잌 등 먹을 것을 발견하는데 거기엔 "나를 먹으세요'라는 글귀가 적혀 있기도 하다. 앨리스가 그걸 먹으면 엄청난 신체적 변화가 일어난다. 매트릭스에서 네오에게 빨간 알약과 파란 알약을 선택하게 되며 네오가 선택한 빨간 알약도 그의 몸을 순식간에 변화시킨다. 오라클은 네오에게 변화의 단서가 될 쿠키를 먹게 하고 사이퍼는 네오에게 술을 준다.
In Wonderland Alice asks a cheshire cat for directions while a "deja vu" black cat crosses Neo's path. Neo also asks for directions while in the matrix.
앨리스는 길을 가다가 체셔 고양이를 여러번 만나고 네오는 라파예트 호텔에서 고양이의 데자부를 경험한다. 앨리스는 고양이에게 길을 묻고 네오 일행도 거기서 길을 잃는 상황에 처한다.
One character in "The Matrix" is nicknamed Mouse and in Wonderland Alice meets a mouse in the pool of tears. She also meets a dormouse at the Mad Hatter's Tea Party--interestly, the dormouse is constantly falling asleep.
매트릭스에는 '마우스' 생쥐라는 인물이 있고 앨리스는 눈물의 바다에서 생쥐를 만난다. 또 미치광이 티 파티에서 'Dormouse'를 만난다. 'dormouse'란 동면하는 쥐이다. 파티 내내 잠만 잔다.
(KayJayKim: 이상한 나라의 앨리스에 글자 그대로 'mouse'가 등장하긴 합니다만 앨리스와 'mouse'의 대화가 어떤 의미인지는 아직 모르겠습니다.)
In Wonderland Alice nearly drowns in a pool of her own tears. While in the matrix sewer system, Neo barely stays afloat until the crew rescues him.
앨리스는 자기의 눈물에 빠져 죽을 뻔한다. 네오도 매트릭스에서 깨어나 하수구로 빠져서 죽을 뻔한 것을 모피어스가 꺼내준다.
Both of Alice's trips, one to Wonderland and the other to the Looking-Glass world, occur while she is sleeping. Neo is sleeping while he is in the matrix simulated world.
앨리스는 잠자는 동안에 이상한 나라로 간다. 네오도 잠자는 동안 꿈나라인 매트릭스에 산다.
Alice enters the Looking-Glass world through a mirror that magically becomes fluid-like so she can climb into it. As Alice tells her kitten:
"Looking-Glass world"에서 거울이 액체로 변해 앨리스가 그 너머로 타고 올라가서는 고양이에게 말한다.
" 'Let's pretend there's a way of getting through into it, somehow, Kitty. Let's pretend the glass has got all soft like gauze, so that we can get through. Why, it's turning into a sort of mist now, I declare!' And certainly the glass was beginning to melt away, just like a bright silverly mist."
"자, 키티야, 저 안에 들어갈 수 있다고 생각해 보자. 거울이 거즈 천처럼 부드러워져서 우리가 통과할 수 있다고 생각해 보자. 아니, 거울이 안개 같은 것으로 변하고 있어, 틀림없어! 그리고 거울은 찬란한 은빛 안개처럼, 분명히 녹고 있었다."(거울 나라의 앨리스 p20, 손영미 역, 시공주니어)
In "The Matrix" Neo enters the real world after being consumed by a mirror which, like Alice's mirror, appeared normal at first but then took on a fluid-like property.
앨리스처럼 매트릭스에서 네오도 거울을 통해 현실세계로 온다. 거울은 처음에 정상으로 보였으나 나중에 액체처럼 녹아내렸다.
In the Looking-Glass world everything is backwards, including a book that Alice tries to read. This is because everything is appears reversed or backwards when viewed in a mirror. As for "The Matrix," the code is made up mostly of backwards Katana letters. (Katana is a form of Japanse writing.)
"Looking-Glass world"에서는 모든 것이 거꾸로이다. 앨리스가 읽는 책도 거꾸로 되어 있다. 왜냐하면 거울을 통해 보는 사물의 모습은 역전되어 있기 때문이다. 매트릭스 코드는 일본어 카타카나를 뒤집은 모양을 하고 있다.
In Wonderland, a pigeon complains to Alice about not having "a wink of sleep" in three weeks.
비둘기는 3주 동안 한숨도 못 잤다고 앨리스에게 하소연한다.
In "The Matrix," Agent Smith points out that Neo is actually two people--Neo and Thomas A. Anderson. In Chapter 1 of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," Alice ponders a similar dual-personality concept: "But it's no use now to pretend to be two people! Why, there's hardly enough of me left to make ONE respectable person!"
스미스 요원은 네오가 두개의 인생을 살았음을 지적한다. 이상한 나라의 앨리스에서 앨리스도 혼자서 두 사람이 대화하듯 놀기를 좋아한다. "하지만 지금은 두 사람인 척해 봤자 아무 소용 없어! 그래, 지금 난 품위있는 한 사람이 되기에도 모자라잖아!"
In "The Matrix" all of the characters names (as well as many symbols and concepts) have double, sometimes even multiple meanings. According to the Wachowski brothers, this was intentional. While in the Looking-Glass world, Alice has a conversation about word meanings with Humpty Dumpty:
등장인물의 이름은 이중, 삼중의 의미를 가진다. 이것의 감독이 의도한 바이다. "Looking-Glass world"에서 앨리스는 험프티-덤프티와 단어의 의미에 대해 이렇게 묻고 답한다.
"My name is Alice, but----"
내 이름은 앨리스야
"It's a stupid name enough!" Humpty Dumpty interrupted impatiently. "What does it mean?"
"그것 참 웃기는 이름이다!" 험피 덤피가 묻는다. "근데 그게 무슨 뜻이지?"
"MUST a name mean something?" Alice asked doubtfully.
"이름에 꼭 뜻이 있어야 하니?" 앨리스가 반문하자
"Of course it must," Humpty Dumpty said with a short laugh.
"그럼" 험피 덤피가 웃으며 대답한다.
Later on in their conversation, word meanings come up again:

"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean--neither more nor less."
험피 덤피가 경멸하듯이 말한다. "내가 어떤 말을 하든 언제나 정확한 뜻으로 말하지. 조금도 틀림이 없이."
"The question is," said Alice, "whether you CAN make words mean so many different things."
앨리스가 묻는다. "그렇다면 어떤 말이 다양한 뜻을 가질 수는 없는 것이군."
In "The Matrix," Neo has some trouble figuring out who he is. However, as Trinity tells Neo "the matrix cannot tell you who you are." When Neo goes to see the Oracle, she asks him if he believes he is the One and then points to a plaque that reads "Know Thyself." In Chapter 2 of "Alice's Adventures In Wonderland," Alice says:
매트릭스에서 네오는 자신이 누구인지 알려고 노력하지만 트리니티가 말하듯이 매트릭스는 그가 누구인지 대답해 줄 수 없다. 오라클을 만났을 때에 그녀는 '너 자신을 알라'고 쓰여진 판을 보여준다. 앨리스도 "Alice's Adventures In Wonderland" 2장에서 말한다.
"Dear, dear! How queer everything is today! And yesterday things went on just as usual. I wonder if I've changed in the night? Let me think---WAS I the same when I got up this morning? I almost think I can remember feeling a little different. But if I'm not the same, the next question is, 'Who in the world am I?' Ah, that's the great puzzle!"
"오늘은 정말 이상한 날이군. 어제까지만 해도 아무렇지도 않았는데... 그렇다면 혹시 어젯밤에 내가 변해 버린 게 아닐까? 가만 있자 오늘 아침 일어났을 때 난 예전과 똑같았었나? 조금 이상한 기분이었던 것 같기도 하고... 하지만 만약 똑같지 않았다면 무슨 문제가 생긴 걸까? 그럼 도대체 난 누구지? 아, 정말 모를 일이야!" (19페이지 <이상한 나라의 앨리스, 혜원 월드베스트 70, 봉현선 옮김, 혜원출판사)
While in the Looking-Glass world, Alice considers going into the woods where things have no names. "I wonder what'll become of MY name when I go in? I shouldn't like to lose it at all--because they'd have to give me another, and it wold be almost certain to be an ugly one." Once she is the woods, Alice does find herself unable to remember who she is. As Alice says, "Then it really HAS happened, after all! And now, who am I? I WILL remember, if I can! I'm determined to do it!"
"거울 나라의 앨리스"에서 앨리스는 모든 사물이 이름이 없는 숲으로 들어가는 것을 걱정한다. "이 안으로 들어가면 내 이름은 어떻게 될까? 이름을 잃어버리긴 정말 싫은데. 그러면 사람들이 다른 이름을 지어 주겠지만, 그건 보나마나 미운 이름일 거야." 앨리스가 숲으로 들어가자 자기 자신이 누군지 기억할 수 없게 된다. "그런 일이 진짜로 일어났잖아! 그런데 나는 누구지? 할 수만 있다면, 꼭 기억해 내고 말 거야! 난 그렇게 하기로 결심했어!"(66~67페이지, 거울 나라의 앨리스, 손영미 역, 시공주니어)
In "Through The Looking-Glass," the idea of "a dream within a dream" and the questioning of what is real and what is not real occurs repeatedly, just like in "The Matrix". (For my numerous Matrix examples concerning dreams, sleeping, and reality please see my Themes page.)
"거울 나라의 앨리스"에서 "꿈 속의 또다른 꿈"이란 개념과 무엇이 진실이고 무엇이 거짓인가에 대한 개념이 매트릭스에서처럼 자주 등장한다.
"Isn't he a LOVELY sight?" said Tweedledum. Alice couldn't say honestly that he [the Red King] was. He had a tall red nightcap on with a tassel, and he was lying crumpled up into a sort of untidy heap, and snoring loud--"Fit to snore his head off!" as Tweedledum remarked.
트위들덤이 말했다. "자는 모습이 사랑스럽지 않니?" 앨리스는 붉은 왕이 어떻다고 정직하게 말할 수가 없었다. 붉은 왕은 술이 달린 커다란 빨간 나이트캡을 쓰고 볼썽사납게 웅크린 채 트위들덤의 말마따나 "머리가 떨어져 나가도록!" 큰 소리로 코를 골고 있었다.(85페이지, 거울 나라의 앨리스, 손영미 역, 시공주니어)
"I'm afraid he'll catch a cold lying on the damp grass, "said Alice, who was a very thoughful little girl.
"젖은 잔디 위에서 자면 감기 걸릴 텐데" 앨리스는 아주 생각이 깊은 아이라 이렇게 말했다.
"He's dreaming now," said Tweedledee. "And what do you think he's dreaming about?"
"붉은 왕은 지금 꿈을 꾸고 있어" 트위들디가 물었다. "무슨 꿈을 꾸고 있는 것 같니?"
Alice said, "Nobody can guess that."
앨리스가 대답했다. "그건 아무도 모르죠."
"Why, about YOU!" Tweedledee exclaimed, clapping his hands truimphantly. "And if he left off dreaming about you, where do you suppose you'd be?"
"바로 너에 대한 꿈이야!" 트위들디는 의기양양하게 박수를 치며 소리쳤다. "붉은 왕이 꿈에서 깨어나면 너는 어디에 있을 것 같니?"
"Where I am now, of course," said Alice.
"물론, 지금 내가 있는 곳에요" 앨리스가 말했다.
"Not you!" Tweedledee said contemptuously. "You'd be nowhere. Why, you're only a sort of thing in his dream!"
"그렇지 않아!" "너는 어디에도 없을 거야. 말하자면 너는 붉은 왕의 꿈에만 나올 뿐이거든."
"If that there King was to wake, " added Tweedledum, "you'd go out--bang--just like a candle!"
"붉은 왕이 꿈에서 깨어나면" "넌 펑!하고 사라질 거야. 마치 촛불처럼!"
"I shouldn't!" Alice exclaimed indignantly. "Besides, if I'M only a
sort of thing in his dream, what are YOU, I should like to know?"
"난 안 그럴 거에요!" 앨리스가 외쳤다. "그리고 내가 붉은 왕의 꿈에만 나올 뿐이라면 당신들은 뭐죠? 말해 보세요."
"Ditto," said Tweedledum.
"똑같아"
"Ditto, ditto!" cried Tweedledee. He shouted this so loud that Alice couldn't help saying, "Hush! You'll be waking him, I'm afraid, if you make so much noise."
"똑같아, 똑같아!" 트위들디가 너무 크게 소리를 지르는 바람에 앨리스는 도저히 이 말을 하지 않을 수가 없었다. "쉿! 그렇게 시끄럽게 떠들다간 붉은 왕을 깨우겠어요."
"Well, it's no use YOUR talking about waking him, "said Tweedledum, "when you're only one of the things in his dream. You know very well you're not real."
트위들덤이 말했다. "응, 네가 붉은 왕을 깨우겠느니 마느니 말해 봤자 소용 없어. 넌 그저 붉은 왕의 꿈에 나오는 존재일 뿐이야. 넌 네가 실제 인물이 아니라는 걸 알아야 해."
"I AM real!" said Alice who began to cry.
"나는 지금 실제 인물이에요!" 앨리스는 울음을 터뜨렸다.
"You won't make yourself a bit realler by crying," Tweedledee remarked. "There's nothing to cry about."
"운다고 해서 진짜 인물이 될 수 있는 것은 아니지. 울어 봤자 소용 없어." 트위들디가 말했다.
"If I wasn't real," Alice said--half laughing through her tears, it all seemed so ridiculous--"I shouldn't be able to cry tears."
앨리스는 이 모든 것이 너무 황당해서 울다 말고 웃으면서 말했다. "내가 실제 인물이 아니라면 울 수도 없는 거에요."
"I hope you don't suppose those are REAL tears?" Tweedledum interrupted in a tone of great contempt. [Compare that last line to this one from Morpheus: "You think that's air you're breathing now? Hmmm."]
"설마 그게 진짜 눈물이라고 생각하는 건 아니겠지?" 트위들디는 아주 깔보는 투로 말을 막았다. [이 장면을 모피어스가 도장 격투 장면에서 한 말과 비교해 보라.]
Four chapters later in this story, Alice goes on to say:
"So I wasn't dreaming, after all," she said to herself, "unless--unless we're all part of the same dream [like the matrix world]. Only I do hope it's MY dream, and not the Red King's! I don't like belonging to another person's dream," she went on in a rather complaining tone, "I've a great mind to go wake him, and see what happens!"
앨리스는 중얼거렸다. "그럼 그게 꿈이 아니었구나. 만약 꿈이었다면 우린 모두 같은 꿈에 등장한 거고. 이게 꿈이라면 붉은 왕의 꿈이 아니라 내 꿈이었으면 좋겠다. 다른 사람의 꿈에 나오는 것은 싫거든." "가서 왕을 깨워서 무슨 일이 벌어지나 알아봐야겠다!"
