얼굴이 초록색인 괴물이 스르르 나타났다가 없어지는 재미있는 책입니다.
커다란 노란색 눈이 나타나더니 다음 장에선 파랗기도 하고 녹색 빛도 띠는 길쭉한 코가 보입니다.
그리고 빨간 입 속에는 날카로운 이빨이 있습니다.
구불거리는 귀를 가지고 있고 보라색 머리카락은 삐죽삐죽하지요.
드디어 커다랗고 무시무시한 초록색 얼굴의 괴물을 만날 수 있습니다.
하지만 하나도 무섭지 않습니다.
"저리 가!" 라는 주문을 외칠 때마다 머리카락과 귀, 그 다음엔 코, 얼굴, 입, 이빨, 눈이 하나씩 사라집니다.

독특한 아이디어와 판화 기법 등을 이용한 에드 엠벌리의 그림책은 재미있는 요소가 많아 독자들에게 꾸준한 사랑을 받아 오고 있습니다.

손도장 찍기로 유명한 Ed Emberly의 입체북입니다.
Monster하면 제법 무서워 할만도 한데 이 책은 평면의 종이 위에 입체적인 monster가 나타났다가 사라져버리는 그래서 monster를 우스꽝스럽고 친근한 캐릭터로 만들어버리고마는 재미있는 책입니다. 더군다나 책 속에 연달아 나오는 “Go away~~!!!"라는 말은 ”수리수리 마수리~“ 같은 주문처럼 무서운 몬스터를 물리쳐주니 우리 친구들에겐 더없이 든든한 주문이 아닐까요?
자~ 그럼 다같이 주문을 외쳐볼까요?

1. Body Part
1) 먼저 monster와 신체에 관련된 부분은 "The Sesame Street Dictionary"를 같이 보며 아이에게 그림과 함께
사전적 의미를 짚어 보았습니다.
a. Monster : A monster is a large or strange living thing.
( 괴물은 덩치가 크거나 이상해요.)
b. eye : Your eye is a part of your face. You use your eyes for seeing.
( 눈은 얼굴에 있어요. 볼 수 있어요.)
c. nose : Your nose is a part of you face. You use your nose to breathe and smell.
( 코는 얼굴에 있어요. 코로 숨을 쉬고 냄새를 맡죠.)
d. mouth : Your mouth is a part of your face. You eat, drink, and speak through your mouth.
( 입은 얼굴에 있어요. 입으로 먹고, 마시고, 말해요.)
e. teeth : Teeth is the plural of tooth.
( 이빨들은 이빨의 복수형이에요.)
Tooth is one of your teeth. Teeth are in your mouth and are used for biting and chewing. ( 이빨들은 입안에 있어서 깨물거나 씹는 데 쓰죠.)
f. ear : Your ear is the part of your body that you use for hearing.
( 귀는 우리 몸에서 듣는 부분이죠.)
g. hair : Hair grows on the top of your head and on other parts of your body.
( 머리카락은 다른 신체부위의 꼭대기인 머리에서 자라요.)
h. face : Your face is the front part of your head.
( 얼굴은 머리 앞쪽에 있어요.)
물론 body picture 놓고 하나하나 짚어가며 보여줘도 body에 관해 인지하는 것은 쉽지만 이렇게 사전적 의미를 알아보는 것도 중요한 것 같습니다.
2) Body Picture를 보면서 다시 얘기해 보세요.
3) Song Time!
a. Body Part가 나왔으니 “ Head and shoulders knees and toes."를 같이 불러 보아요. " Head and shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes." *2

2. Color
이 책은 신체부위 말고도 다양한 color를 그 color보다 다양한 갖가지 형용사들이 꾸며주며, 까만 종이 위에 monster를 무시무시한 캐릭터로 만듭니다.
하지만 우리 친구들에겐 마술 같은 주문이 있죠?
"Go AWAY, Big Green Monster!"
"... and DON'T COME BACK! Until I say so."
1) Color 인지는 ' Rainbow' 만큼 좋은게 없는 것 같습니다.

c. " Mouse Paint " - 빨강, 노랑, 파랑으로 만들 수 있는 색은 무엇이 있을 까요?

3. Adjectives !
이 책에서는 형용사의 순서도 즐겁게 익힐 수 있죠.
어쩌면 그 많은 형용사들 중에 이런 말들이 있을까요?
표현들이 정말 재미있네요.
1) two big yellow eyes ( 커다랗고 노란 눈 두개)
2) a long bluish-greenish nose ( 푸른 빛이 나면서도 초록 빛이 있는 길다란 코 한 개 ) 괴물이 푸르딩딩한 코( 푸르죽죽한 코 )라고 하니 재밌네요!
3) a big red mouth with sharp white teeth ( 하얀 뾰족 이빨이 있는 커다란 빨간 입 한 개 ) 정말 무서울만 합니다.
4) two little squiggly ears ( 작고 꼬불꼬불한 귀 두 개 ) 과히 monster 답군요.
5) scraggly purple hair ( 보랏빛이 나는 삐죽삐죽한 머리카락 )
삐죽삐죽한 머리가 무슨 색이라구요?
6) a big scary green face ( 크고 무시무시한 초록 얼굴 한 개 )
이렇게 다양한 형용사들을이 책의 고조를 더해갑니다.

4. Activities
1) Little green monster 만들기.
평소 겁이 많은 아림이는 젤 무서워하는 고양이를 보면 “야옹이(?), 저리가!!!”하다가 ,이 책을 읽고는 “야옹이, Go away!!!" 하더니만 그 후부터는 뭐든지 무서우면 ”Go away~!"를 외칩니다. 이렇게 마술 같은 주문 ”Go away~"를 너무나 사랑하는 아림이와 종이컵을 이용해서 'little green monster'를 만들어봤습니다.
2) 또 “Go away big green monster"를 출력해서 바로 쓸 수 있는 사이트입니다.
' Big green monster'를 금방 만들어 보면서 놀 수 있어요.
코팅해서 깔깔이를 붙이면 융판에서 아이랑 붙였다가 띄었다가 하면서 신나게 놀 수 있답니다.

3) Sight words를 이용한 Bingo game!
예전부터 이 책을 좋아했던 진원이는 reading을 시작하는 단계라 sight word를 이용한 빙고게임을 해 봤어요.
우선 sight word를 집에 붙여 놓고 시간이 날 때마다 눈도장을 찍으면서 익혔습니다.
빙고게임은 sight word를 칸칸이 채워 넣고 어느 쪽으로든 정한 갰수의 직선이 먼저 나오면 이기는 걸로 했습니다.
* Mom ; Jinwon, we'll play 'sight words bingo game'.
I'll go first. ' yellow '
* Child ; OK! I check the word.
Now...my turn! ' with '
4) Rhyming words 익히기.
단어카드를 준비한 후, 보여지는 두 단어가 rhyming words일 때 박수를 두 번, 아닐 때는 " No!"를 외치게 합니다.
* Mom ; Look at this card! Can you read it?
* Child ; ' big '
* Mom ; Yes. Do you know rhyming words with ' big' ?
* Child ; Yes, I know. ' pig '
* Mom ; You can clap your hands two times.

책에 구멍이 뚫려 있어 페이지를 한 장, 한 장 넘길 때마다, Monster의 신체 부분이 모습을 드러냅니다. 책장마다 넘기면서 얼굴을 넣고 흉내를 내면 아이들이 너무 좋아하겠지요? 'Go away!' 하고 크게 소리를 지르면서 괴물의 신체 부분을 역시 차례대로 호명하면 괴물이 사라진답니다.

각 신체부위를 색종이로 만들고 코팅합니다.
각 부위를 붙였다 떼었다 할 수 있게 양면 테이프를 뒷 면에 붙여
준비하고 Storytelling을 해 봅니다.

너희들을 잡아먹을 테다!
만약 괴물이 싫다면 "저리가!"하고 외치면 되.
괴물이 무섭니?
만약 너희가 "저리가"하고 외치게 된다면 괴물은 사라질 거야. 같이 외쳐볼까?
"저리가!"
괴물을 없애버리자!
어떤 부분을 먼저 떼어낼까?
기다란 코?
좋아! 코를 떼어내면서 "기다란 코야, 사라져!"하고 외쳐볼까?
아니! 내 코가 어디로 갔지?
의자 밑에 있나? 침대 위에 있나?
이게 내 콘가? 아닌데..
이게 내 콘가? 아닌데..
이제, 괴물의 눈을 떼어 내 볼까?
무슨 색이니?
몇개가 있니?
크니? 작니?
괴물이 두개의 커다란 노란 눈을 가졌구나.
뭐라고 말해 볼까?
"노란눈아, 저리가!"
봐! 괴물이 어디에 있지?
괴물이 "정말 무서운 아이들이군!
다시는 절대로 돌아오지 않을테야!"하고 말하는 구나.괴물을 제거해 버렸어!
정말 잘했네!
