한 주간 망중한을 보내고 Couples Resort 를 떠나기위해 로비에 나왔더니 3인조 레게팀이 흥겨운 케레비안 송을 불러주었다. 5불 쾌척하였더니 쉐이커 (Shaker)를 들려주고. 악단에 편입시켜주었다. 나도모르게 신나게 흔들며 춤추었다. 이게 레게의 힘이다.
일찍이 캐리비안 장르였던 칼립소(Calypso)를 연주해오며 백인 관광객 전용 음악산업의 형태로 발전해오던 자메이카의 음악의 최종진화형.
비틀즈와 우드스탁으로 대표되던 저항의 시대인 1960년대 말부터 등장하기 시작하여 1970년대에 밥 말리(Bob Marley)라는 불세출의 슈퍼스타가 나타난 이후 세계인의 사랑을 받는다. 어려우면 어려울 수록 사운드트랙 역시 레게 대중화에 크게 기여했다.
서양 대중 음악에 최초로 레게 리듬을 도입한 곡은 비틀즈의 Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da이며, 전설적인 록밴드 레드 제플린도 D’yer Mak’er라는 레게 곡을 발표하고 인기를 얻기도 하였다.
