영미시 100회 기념 시<When Lilacs Last in the Door-yard Bloom’d/지난 번 라일락이 앞마당에 피었을 때>완역 게재-Whitman

오륙도 문학 <영미시 감상>의 100회 연재 기념으로 미국인들이 가장 애독하는 Walt Whitman (1819–1892)시중 한 편으로 <When Lilacs Last in the Door-yard Bloom’d:지난 번 라일락이 앞마당에 피었을 때>를 완역하여 소개키로 한다.

이 시는 휘트먼이 쓴 링컨 대통령 추모 시 4편 중 한 편.

이 시가 링컨의 죽음을 애도하는 시이지만 이 시의 본래의 주제는 죽음의 문제다. 앞서 소개한 <나 자신의 노래>에서 보듯 휘트먼에게서 죽음은 생의 파멸이 아니라 새로운 전진이라고 했다.

동시에 이 시의 주 이미지는 링컨을 별, 라일락을 사랑,  새를 영혼의 목소리로 부각시키고 있다. 링컨의 서거 시엔  봄이 무르익어 갈 5월 라일락이 집집마다 향내를 내뿜고 논밭에선 노란 밀밭이 그림처럼 펼쳐져 있어 시 전체에 봄의 향이 가득함을 알 수 있다.특히 휘트먼은 이 시에서 강조하는 죽음에 대한 인식은 단호하다.<죽음을 알고 죽음에 대한 거룩한 지혜를 얻는다,>또한 시인이 동반하는 두 반려자는 <한쪽에는 걸어가는 죽음의 지혜>와 <다른 한쪽에 바싹 다가가서 걷는 죽음의 사상>이다.

결론적으로 그는 죽음의 의미를 통찰하고 죽음은 곧 재생을 의미하면서<오라 사랑스럽고 마음 편 죽음이여>라고 찬가를 부른다.

WHEN lilacs( manly love) last in the door-yard bloom’d,/bloom을 수식하는 부사

지난 번 라일락이 앞마당에 피었을 때  

And the great star early droop’d (fell)in the western sky in the night,

그리고 밤에 큰 별이 일찍 서녘 하늘에 질 때 

I mourn’d—and yet shall mourn with ever-returning spring.  

나는 슬퍼했다.그리고 여전히 슬퍼하리라.해마다 돌아오는 봄과 더불어 

O ever-returning spring! trinity(3가지:라일락+별+링컨) sure to me you bring;

해마다 돌아오는 봄이여! 너는 분명 세 가지를 나에게 가져오리라;

Lilac blooming perennial(2년이상 지속되는), and drooping star in the west,          5

해마다 피는 라일락과 서녘에서 지는 별과,

And thought of him(링컨) I love.

그리고 , 내가 생각하는 그 분의 생각을.

아,서녘으로 떨어지는 굳센 별이여! 

O shades of night! O moody, tearful night!  

아, 밤의 그림자여! 아,우울한 눈물겨운 별이여!

O great star disappear’d! O the black murk (=darkness)that hides the star!  

아,사라진 큰 별이여! 아,그 별을 가리는 어둠이여!

O cruel hands that hold me powerless! O helpless soul of me!   10

In the door-yard fronting an old farm-house, near the white-wash’d palings목책,

보얗게 칠한 담장 주위 낡은 농가 앞마당에   

Stands the lilac bush, tall-growing, with heart-shaped leaves of rich green,  

심장 모양의  짙은 녹색 잎이 달린 키 큰 라일락 덤불이 있고,

With many a pointed blossom, rising, delicate, with the perfume strong I love,  

내가 좋아하는 짙은 향기 내뿜으며 아기자기 피어난 qY족한 꽃들이 보이고,

With every leaf a miracle-and from this bush in the door-yard,   15

잎잎이 기적을 달고- 앞마당 이 덤불에서

With delicate-color’d blossoms, and heart-shaped leaves of rich green,  

섬세한 색깔의 꽃과 짙은 녹색으로 심장 모양을 잎들과 더불어,

A sprig, with its flower, I break.  

꽃이 달린 가지 하나를 꺾는다.

In the swamp, 늪, 소택(지), 습지 in secluded recesses,깊숙한 곳

깊숙이 들어 간 한적한 곳 늪에서,  

A shy and hidden bird is warbling a song.

수줍은 새 한 마리 노래한다.

봄이 온 광활한 대지를 지나서 온 도시를 누비며,

좁은 길 양쪽 논밭의 풀 사이 끝없는 풀밭을 지나,

With the countless torches lit—with the silent sea of faces, and the unbared heads,  불붙은 무수한 횃불과-사람들의 얼굴들과 모자를 쓴 머리들의 말없는 바다와,

With the waiting depot, the arriving coffin, and the sombre faces,

기다리고 있는 정거장, 도착하는 관,그리고 침울한 얼굴들과,  

With sombre침울한  through the night, with the thousand voices rising strong and solemn; 

 온 밤으로 흐르는 침울,힘차고 장엄하게 들려오는 수천이 목소리들과,

The dim-lit churches and the shuddering organs—Where amid these you journey, 

희미하게 불 밝혀진 교회들과 떨리는 오르간-이런 가운데 당신은 떠나며, 

With the tolling, tolling bells’ perpetual clang;뗑 하고 울리다  

울리는 울리는 종소리의 끝없는 울림과;

Here! coffin that slowly passes,

자,서서히 지나가는 관이여!

Now I know what you must have meant, as a month since we walk’d,

As we walk’d in silence the transparent shadowy night,

내가 맑고 그윽한 밤을 걸었을 때, 

As I saw you had something to tell, as you bent to me night after night,

밤마다 내 쪽으로 몸을 구부리고 뭔가를 말하려는 당신을 보았을 때,  

As you droop’d from the sky low down, as if to my side, (while the other stars all look’d on;)   60

The varied and ample land—the South and the North in the light—Ohio’s shores, and flashing Missouri,  

다양하고 풍요한 대지- 빛 속의 남과 북,오하이주의 해안과 번쩍이는 미조리와,

And ever the far-spreading prairies, cover’d with grass and corn.

Under the arching heavens of the afternoon swift passing, and the voices of children and women,

빨리 지나가는 오후의 창궁 아래에, 아이들과 여인들의 목소리를,   

The many-moving sea-tides,—and I saw the ships how they sail’d,

자주 움직이는 바다의 조수를, 몇 척의 배의 항해를 보았다. 

And the summer approaching with richness, and the fields all busy with labor,  115

그리고 풍성하게 다가오는 여름을,모두가 일로 분주한 들판을,

And the infinite separate houses, how they all went on, each with its meals and minutia  상세;사소한 일of daily usages;

And the streets, how their throbbings 고동치다, 맥이 뛰다, 두근[울렁]거리다 throbb’d, and the cities pent갇힌(pen의 과거)—lo! then and there, 

거리들이, 고동치는 모습을, 그리고 갇힌 도시를 보았다-보라!당장 저기를,

Falling upon them all, and among them all, enveloping me with the rest,

그들 모두 위에,그들 모두 속에서 내려서 다른 모든 것과 함께 나를 덮어 싸면서 

Appear’d the cloud, appear’d the long black trail; 

구름이 나타난다, 검고 긴 구름이 나타난다;

And I knew Death, its thought, and the sacred knowledge of death.  120

I fled forth to the hiding receiving night, that talks not,

말 없는 밤을 맞이하여, 그 숨을 곳으로 ,  

Down to the shores of the water, the path by the swamp in the dimness, 어스름

물기슭으로 내려가, 어스름 속에서 늪가의 좁은 길을 지나,

To the solemn shadowy cedars, and ghostly pines so still.  

엄숙한 그늘진 삼나무와, 아주 고요한 유령 같은 소나무 숲으로 나는 도망쳤다. 

And the singer so shy to the rest receiv’d me;  

그러자 다른 이에게 매우 수줍은 여가수가 나를 받아드렸다;

The gray-brown bird I know, receiv’d us comrades three; 

내가 아는 회갈색 새는 우리 동료 세 명을 받아 드렸다;

And he sang what seem’d the carol of death, and a verse for him I love.

그리고 죽음의 찬가를, 내가 사랑하는 그분을 위해 시 한 편을 노래해 주었다.

으슥한 숨은 곳에서,

From the fragrant cedars, and the ghostly pines so still,

향기로운 삼나무와 아주 조용한 유령 같은 소나무 숲에서 , 

Came the carol of the bird.  

 새의 노래가 들려왔다 .

And the charm of the carol rapt 넋[마음]을 빼앗긴me,  

그리고 그 노래의 매력이 나를 황홀의 지경으로 몰아갔다,

As I held, as if by their hands, my comrades in the night;

Over the tree-tops I float thee a song!  160

나무꼭대기 위에서 그대 위해 노래 하나를 띄우노라!

Over the rising and sinking waves—over the myriad 무수한 fields, and the prairies wide;  

일렁이는 파도 넘어-무수한 논밭과 대초원 넘어,

Over the dense-pack’d cities all, and the teeming우글우글한 wharves부두, and ways, 

조밀한 도시 모두 넘어,그리고 우글우글한 파도와 인도 넘어

I float this carol with joy, with joy to thee, O death!  

아,죽음이여! 나는 기꺼이 기꺼이 그대에게 이 찬송가를 띄운다!

To the tally of《of》;부합, 일치 my soul, 

내 영혼에 동의로서,

Loud and strong kept up the gray-brown bird,  165

그 희갈색 새는 요란하고 힘차게 울어댔다,

With pure, deliberate느긋한 notes, spreading, filling the night. 

밤하늘 퍼져 가득히, 순수하고, 느긋한 울음을.

Loud 큰 소리를 내는in the pines and cedars dim,  어둑함

어둑한 고나무와 삼나무 숲에서 큰 소리로 울고,  

Clear in the freshness moist, and the swamp-perfume;  

상쾌한 습기와 늪의 향기 속에서 맑은 목소리로;

And I with my comrades there in the night.  

그리고 그 날 밤 거기서 나의 동반자와 함께 있었다.

While my sight that was bound in my eyes unclosed,  170

내 두 눈에 한정된 시야가 풀렸을 때,

As to long panoramas전경(全景) of visions.  

환상의 긴 파노라마가 나타났다.  

I saw askant 비스듬히;곁눈으로the armies; 

나는 곁눈으로 많은 군대를 보았다. 

And I saw, as in noiseless dreams, hundreds of battle-flags;

그리고 나는 조용한 꿈속에서처럼, 수백의 군대깃발을 보았다;

Borne through the smoke of the battles, and pierc’d with missiles, I saw them, 

전쟁의 포연 속에서 밀리며 ,미사일에 찢겨진 것들을 보았다.

And carried hither and yon 저쪽에 through the smoke, and torn and bloody;  175

또  포연 속에서 여기 저기 끌려다니며 ,찢기고 피 묻고,

And at last but a few shreds조각, 단편,  left on the staffs, 통과 표지 (and all in silence,) 

또 최후엔  몇 조각만이 깃대(표지)에 남고,(모두는 말이 없고)

And the staffs all splinter’d and broken.  

 그리고 그 깃대도 모두 산산이 부서지고 꺾여 있었다. 

I saw battle-corpses, myriads of them, 

나는 전쟁터의 시체들,수 없이 많은 시체를 보았다.

And the white skeletons of young men—I saw them;  

그리고 젊은이들의 하얀 유골을 보았다.

I saw the debris 파편, 잔해and debris of all the dead soldiers of the war;  180

나는 전사자들의 무더기를 보았다;

But I saw they were not as was thought;

그러나 나는 상상한 것과는 다르다는 것을 알았다. 

They themselves were fully at rest—they suffer’d not;

그들 자신들은 매우 편안할 뿐 - 고통스러워하지 않했다;  

The living remain’d and suffer’d—the mother suffer’d,

살아남은 자는 살아남아 고통 받았다-그  어머니들도 고통 받았다,

And the wife and the child, and the musing생각에 잠기는, 명상적인

 comrade suffer’d, 

그리고 그 처자도,생각에 잠기는 전우들 고통 받았다.

And the armies that remain’d suffer’d.  185

그리고 살아남은 군인들도 고통을 받았다.

Passing the visions, passing the night;

幻影을 지나 ,밤을 지나;

Passing, unloosing the hold of my comrades’ hands; 

곽 쥔 내 동료의 두 손을 풀고,지나서;

Passing the song of the hermit 은둔자  bird, and the tallying song of my soul,

 지빠귀 새의 노래와 내 영혼과 일치되는 그 노래를 지나서;

Victorious song, death’s outlet song, yet varying, ever-altering song,  

승리의 노래,죽음을 알리는 노래,그리고 다양하게 ,항상 변화하는 노래,

As low and wailing, yet clear the notes, rising and falling, flooding the night,  190

낮게 비통하게,그러나 높았다가 가라앉았다하는 맑은 가락은 밤을 휩쓸었고,

Sadly sinking and fainting, as warning and warning, and yet again bursting with joy,  슬프게 가라앉고 희미해지며, 경고하듯  경고하듯이, 그러나 기쁨으로 불타오르듯,

Covering the earth, and filling the spread of the heaven,

대지를 뒤덮고, 넓은 하늘에 퍼지며,   

As that powerful psalm in the night I heard from recesses,

내가 으슥한 곳에서 들은 밤의 힘찬 성가처럼 , 

Passing, I leave thee, lilac with heart-shaped leaves;

지나면서 나는 심장 모양의 잎.그대를 두고 떠난다;  

I leave thee there in the door-yard, blooming, returning with spring,  195

나는 봄마다 돌아와서 꽃을 피우는 저기 앞마당에 있는 그대를 두고 떠난다.

I cease from my song for thee; 

나는 그대 위한 노래를 그친다.

From my gaze on thee in the west, fronting the west, communing with thee,

서쪽으로 향하여 그대와 마음을 통하면서 서쪽에 있는 그대를 바라보는 시선을 거둔다. 

O comrade lustrous, with silver face in the night.  

아,밤속에 은빛 얼굴로 빛나던 동료여!

Yet each I keep, and all, retrievements out of the night;

그러나 밤으로부터 되찾은 모든 것들을 나는 지키겠다.

The song, the wondrous chant of the gray-brown bird,  200

회갈색 새의 신비스런 노래 ,그 노래를,

And the tallying chant, the echo arous’d in my soul, 

그리고 내영혼 속에서 일어난 메아리에 부합되는 노래를,

With the lustrous and drooping star, with the countenance full of woe,

비탄에 잠긴 얼굴을 한 빛나는 지는 별과,  

With the lilac tall, and its blossoms of mastering odor;

키 큰 라일락,그리고 짙은 향을 지닌 그 꽃을 

With the holders holding my hand, nearing the call of the bird,  

새가 부르는 소리에 다가가, 내 손을 쥐어주는 지지자들을,

Comrades mine, and I in the midst, and their memory ever I keep—for the dead I loved so well;  205

나와 양편에 세운 나의 동료와,내가 그토록 사랑한 죽은 이를 위하여 그들의 추억을 간직하고,

For the sweetest, wisest soul of all my days and lands...and this for his dear sake;

나의 시대와 나라에서 가장 다정하고 현명한 이를 위하여 그리고 이 시를 그리운 그에게 바친다;   

Lilac and star and bird, twined with the chant of my soul, 

라일락과 별과 새가 내 영혼의 찬송과 뒤얽혀 있다, 

There in the fragrant pines, and the cedars dusk and dim.  

저기 향기로운 솔밭과 어둡고 침침한 삼나무 밭에서.

여태껏 다룬 시는 학부 영문학과 <영미시>에서 다루는 시를 골라 번역.게재했다.

거기서 다루는 시인과 시를 소개하였다. 여기서는 해설과 함께 원문에 충실하게 완역판으로

선을 보였다.영문학도에게는 영어 학습에,문인들에게 영미시의 이해에 도움이 되었을 것이라고 본다.  앞으로 100여편은 나머지 다루지 못한 시인과 작품을 게재하고 국내에 소개되지않는 영미시를 소개할까 한다.
