Chimney Sweeper

When my mother died I was very young,
And my father sold me while yet my tongue
Could scarcely cry " 'weep! 'weep! 'weep! 'weep!"
So your chimneys I sweep, and in soot I sleep.
There's little Tom Dacre, who cried when his head,
That curled like a lamb's back, was shaved, so I said
"Hush, Tom! never mind it, for when your head's bare
You know that the soot cannot spoil your white hair."
And so he was quiet, and that very night
As Tom was a-sleeping, he had such a sight!
That thousands of sweepers, Dick, Joe, Ned, and Jack,
Were all of them locked up in coffins of black.
And by came an Angel who had a bright key,
And he opened the coffins and set them all free;
Then down a green plain leaping, laughing, they run,
And wash in a river, and shine in the sun.
Then naked and white, all their bags left behind,
They rise upon clouds and sport in the wind;
And the Angel told Tom, if he'd be a good boy,
He'd have God for his father, and never want joy.
And so Tom awoke, and we rose in the dark,
And got with our bags and our brushes to work.
Though the morning was cold, Tom was happy and warm;
So if all do their duty they need not fear harm. |

굴뚝 청소부

어머니가 돌아가셨을 때 전 아주 어렸습니다.
아버지가 저를 팔아버렸습니다. 아직 제 혀가
―뚝! ―뚝! 소리도 제대로 내지 못할 때였습니다.
그래서 전 굴뚝청소를 하고 검댕 속에서 잡니다.
톰 데이커라는 꼬마가 있는데, 양털처럼 곱슬곱슬한
머리칼이 잘릴 때 울었습니다. 그래서 제가 말했죠.
“울지 마, 톰! 신경쓸 거 없어, 머리칼이 없으면
네 하얀 머리칼이 검댕에 더럽혀질 일도 없잖아.”
그러자 톰은 울음을 그쳤습니다. 바로 그날 밤
톰은 잠을 자다가 꿈에 굉장한 광경을 보았습니다!
딕이랑, 조랑, 네드랑, 잭이랑 수천 명의 청소부가
모두 검은 관 속에 갇혀 있는 게 아니겠습니까.
그런데 천사 하나가 반짝이는 열쇠를 가지고 와서
관들을 열고 다 밖으로 나오게 해 주었습니다.
아이들이 푸른 들판을 팔짝거리며 웃으며 달려갑니다.
강에서 몸을 씻자 몸뚱이들이 햇빛을 받아 빛납니다.
발가벗은 흰 몸으로, 다들 청소가방을 팽개친 채,
아이들은 구름 위로 올라가 바람을 타고 놉니다.
천사가 톰에게 말했습니다, 네가 착한 아이가 되면
하나님을 아버지로 모시고 언제나 기쁨이 넘칠 것이라고.
그러다 톰은 잠을 깼고, 우리도 어둠 속에서 일어나
모두들 가방과 솔을 챙겨 일터로 향했습니다.
아침은 차가웠지만 톰은 행복하고 마음이 따뜻했습니다.
모두 자기 할 일을 다 하면 걱정할 것이 없을 것입니다. |
