* 침묵과 분위기를 통해 현대 세계와 인간 세계의 부조리함, 커뮤니케이션의 불가능성을 표현.

* 위협 희극(comedy of menace): 우스운 장면을 연출하다가도 애매하고 정의될 수 없는 공포감을 불러일으키는 극. 표면적으로는 코미디 형식을 취하나 갑작스레 폭력적인 면모가 돌출되기도 함. 핀터 작품의 일관된 주제 및 소재는 폐쇄된 공간(방)과 그 곳을 위협하는 침입자들. 안전의 상징(방) - 폐쇄 -교류 차단 - 정체불명의 침입 - 파괴 - 개방. 여기서 방을 파괴하는 위협과 침입이 상징하는 바를 눈여겨 볼 것.

* 극의 분위기를 보면, 벤은 다소 거칠게 반말을, 거스는 존댓말을 쓸 것이라 추정 가능.

A basement room. Two beds, flat against the back wall. A serving hatch,¹⁾ closed, between the beds. A door to the kitchen and lavatory left. A door to a passage,²⁾ right.

지하실 방. 뒤편 벽 쪽에 평평한 침대가 두 개. 침대 사이로 음식 내보내는 창구가 있다. 왼쪽에 부엌과 화장실로 들어가는 문. 오른쪽에는 통로로 나가는 문.

Ben is lying on a bed reading a paper. Gus is sitting on a bed, right, tying his shoelaces, with difficulty. Both are dressed in shirts, trousers and braces.

벤은 침대에 누워 신문을 읽고 있다. 거스는 오른쪽 침대에 앉아 힘겹게 구두끈을 매고 있다. 두 사람 모두 셔츠와 바지를 입고 있는데, 바지에는 멜빵을 맸다.

Silence

정적.

Gus ties his laces,³⁾ rises, yawns and begins to walk slowly to the door, left. He stops, looks down and shakes his foot.

거스는 구두끈을 다 묶고 일어나 하품을 하고는 왼쪽 문을 향해 천천히 걸어가기 시작한다. 멈추더니 아래를 내려다보고 발을 흔들어 본다.

Ben lowers his paper, and watches him. Gus kneels and unties his shoelace and slowly takes off the shoe. He looks inside it and brings out a flattened matchbox. He shakes it and examines it. Their eyes meet. Ben rattles his paper⁴⁾ and reads. Gus puts the matchbox in his pocket and bends down to put on his shoe. He ties the lace, with difficulty. Ben lowers his paper and watches him.

벤은 신문을 내리고 그를 바라본다. 거스는 무릎을 꿇고서 구두끈을 푼 후, 천천히 구두를 벗는다. 구두 안을 들여다보고 납작해진 성냥갑을 꺼낸다. 성냥갑을 흔들어보고 이리저리 살펴본다. 거스와 벤의 눈이 마주친다. 벤은 신문을 소리 나게 펼쳐 읽는다. 거스는 주머니에 성냥갑을 넣고 몸을 구부려 신을 신는다. 그리고 구두끈을 힘겹게 맨다. 벤은 신문을 내리고 거스를 쳐다본다.

Gus walks to the door, left, stops, and shakes the other foot. He kneels, unties his shoe-lace, and slowly takes off the shoe. He looks inside it and brings out a flattened cigarette packet. He shakes it and examines it. Their eyes meet. Ben rattles his paper and reads. Gus puts the packet in his pocket, bends down, puts on his shoe and ties the lace.

거스는 왼쪽, 문을 향해 걸어가다가 멈춰 서더니 다른 발을 흔들어본다. 무릎을 꿇고 구두끈을 푼 다음, 천천히 신을 벗는다. 구두 안을 들여다보더니 납작해진 담뱃갑을 떠낸다. 담뱃갑을 흔들어보고 이리저리 살펴본다. 두 사람의 눈이 마주친다. 벤은 신문을 소리 나게 펼쳐 읽는다. 거스는 주머니에 담뱃갑을 넣고 몸을 구부려 신을 신고 구두끈을 맨다.

He wanders off, left.

거스는 왼쪽으로 어슬렁어슬렁 걸어간다.

Ben slams the paper down on the bed and glares after him. He picks up the paper and lies on his back, reading.

벤은 신문을 침대 위에 털썩 내려놓고 거스를 따라 시선을 보낸다. 신문을 집어 들고 침대에 누워 읽는다.

Silence.

정적.

A lavatory chain is pulled twice off, left, but the lavatory does not flush.

왼쪽에서 화장실 쇠사슬이 두 번이나 당겨졌지만 물 내리는 소리는 나지 않는다.

Silence.

정적.

GUS reenters, left, and halts at the door, scratching his head.

거스가 왼쪽에서 다시 들어온다. 머리를 긁적이며 문가에 멈춰 선다.

BEN slams down the paper.

벤이 신문을 탁 내려놓는다.

BEN. Kaw!

벤: 에잇!

[He picks up the paper.] (신문을 집어 든다)

What about this? Listen to this! 이게 뭐야? 이것 좀 들어봐!

[He refers to the paper.]⁵⁾ (그는 신문 기사를 가리키며 말한다.)

A man of eighty-seven wanted to cross the road. But there was a lot of traffic, see? He couldn't see how he was going to squeeze through. So he crawled under a lorry.

87세 노인이 길을 건너려 했지. 그런데 차들이 너무 많았어. 알겠어? 노인은 그 길을 어떻게 헤치고 가야할지 알 수가 없었던 거야. 그래서 화물 자동차 밑으로 기어갔다는군.

☞ squeeze through: 간신히 성공하다, 극복하다, 헤치고 나아가다.

GUS. He what?

거스: 노인이 뭐 어쨌다고?

BEN. He crawled under a lorry. A stationary lorry.⁶⁾

벤: 화물 자동차 밑으로 기어갔다고. 정차한 화물 자동차.

GUS. No?

거스: 그럴 리가?

BEN. The lorry started and ran over him.

벤: 화물 자동차가 출발해서 노인을 치었대.

☞ run somebody/something over: (사람, 동물을) 치다.

GUS. Go on!⁷⁾

거스: 허튼 소리!

BEN. That's what it says here.⁸⁾

벤: 여기 그렇게 쓰여 있어.

GUS. Get away.⁹⁾

거스: 말도 안 돼.

BEN. It's enough to make you want to puke,¹⁰⁾ isn't it?

벤: 토하고 싶을 정도로 역겨운 이야기야, 그렇지?

GUS. Who advised him to do a thing like that?

거스: 그렇게 하라고 그 노인한테 충고한 사람이 누구야?

BEN. A man of eighty-seven crawling under a lorry!

벤: 화물 자동차 밑으로 기어간 87세 노인이라니!

GUS. It's unbelievable.

거스: 믿을 수 없는 얘기야.

BEN. It's down here in black and white.¹¹⁾

벤: 여기 그렇게 인쇄돼 있다니까.

GUS. Incredible.

거스: 믿을 수 없어.

Gus shakes his head and exits. Ben lies back and reads.

거스는 머리를 흔들며 나간다. 벤은 누워서 신문을 읽는다.

The lavatory chain is pulled once off left, but the lavatory does not flush.

완쪽 화장실 쇠사슬이 다시 한 번 당겨지지만, 물 내리는 소리는 나지 않는다.

Ben whistles at an item in the paper.

벤은 신문에 난 어느 기사를 보고 휘파람을 분다.

Gus reenters. 거스가 다시 들어온다.

I want to ask you something.¹²⁾

물어 볼 게 있어.

BEN. What are you doing out there?

벤: 거기서 뭐 하는 거야?

GUS. Well, I was just―

거스: 그냥, 난 단지╶

BEN. What about the tea?

벤: 차(茶)는 어떻게 하고?

GUS. I'm just going to make it.

거스: 막 끓이려던 참이야.

BEN. Well, go on, make it.

벤: 알았어. 그렇게 해.

GUS. Yes, I will.

거스: 응, 그럴게.

He sits in a chair. Ruminatively. 그는 의자에 앉는다. 명상에 잠긴 채.

He's laid on¹³⁾ some very nice crockery¹⁴⁾ this time, I'll say that. It's sort of striped. There's a white stripe.

이번 그가 진짜 멋진 도자기 그릇을 가져다 놓았네. 정말이야. 줄무늬 있는 거잖아. 하얀 줄무늬가.

☞ I'll say that. 정말이야.

Ben reads. 벤은 신문을 읽는다.

It's very nice. I'll say that.

매우 훌륭해. 정말로.

Ben turns the page. 벤이 신문지를 넘긴다.

You know, sort of round the cup. Round the rim. All the rest of it's black, you see. Then the saucer's black, except for right in the middle, where the cup goes,¹⁵⁾ where it's white.

뭐랄까, 컵을 둥글렸다고나 할까. 테두리를 둥글렸어. 나머지 부분은 검은색이고. 알겠지. 컵받침도 검은색이야. 컵 놓는 중간 부분만 빼고는. 거긴 하얀 색이네.

Ben reads. 벤은 신문을 읽는다.

The the plates are the same, you see. Only they've got a black stripe―the plates―right across the middle. Yes, I'm quite taken with¹⁶⁾ the crockery.

있잖아, 접시도 마찬가지야. 접시 한 가운데에 말이지. 검은 줄이 하나 딱 그어져 있어. 그래, 난 이 그릇에 반해 버렸어.

BEN. [still reading] What do you want plates for?¹⁷⁾ You're not going to eat.

벤: (계속 신문을 읽으며) 접시는 무엇에 쓰게? 뭐 먹지도 않을 거잖아.

GUS. I've brought a few biscuits.

거스: 비스킷 좀 가져왔다.

BEN. Well, you'd better eat them quick.

벤: 음, 빨리 먹어 버리는 게 낫겠군.

GUS. I always bring a few biscuits. Or a pie. You know I can't drink tea without anything to eat.

거스: 난 항상 비스킷을 몇 조각 가져 온다고. 아니면 파이라도. 그러니까, 뭐라고 같이 먹을 게 없으면 차 마시기가 좀 그렇거든.

BEN. Well, make the tea then, will you? Tim's getting on.¹⁸⁾

벤: 음, 그런데 차 끓인다고 했잖아? 시간 다 돼 간다.

Gus brings out the flattened cigarette packet and examines it.

거스는 납작해진 담뱃갑을 꺼내 자세히 들여다본다.

GUS. You got any cigarettes? I think I've run out.¹⁹⁾

거스: 담배 있어? 난 담배가 다 떨어졌어.

He throws the packet high up and leans forward to catch it.

거스는 담뱃갑을 높이 던져 올리더니 그것을 잡겠답시고 몸을 기울인다.

I hope it won't be a long job, this one.²⁰⁾

이번엔 일이 오래 걸리지 않고 쉽게 끝났으면 좋겠다.

Aiming carefully, he flips the packet under his bed.

신중하게 조준을 하고서는 침대 아래로 담뱃갑을 가볍게 휙 던진다.

Oh, I wanted to ask you something.

아, 맞다! 나 물어볼 게 있어.

BEN. [slamming his paper down] Kaw!

벤: (신문을 탁 내려놓으며) 이거 원!

GUS. What's that?

거스: 뭔데?

BEN. A child of eight killed a cat!

벤: 8살짜리 아이가 고양이를 죽였대!

GUS. Get away.

거스: 에이, 그럴 리가.

BEN. It's a fact. What about that, eh? A child of eight killing a cat!

벤: 사실이야. 어떻게 생각해? 응? 8살짜리가 고양이를 죽이다니!

GUS. How did he do it?

거스: 그 사내아이가 고양이를 어떻게 죽였는데?

BEN. It was a girl.

벤: 여자애야.

GUS. How did she do it?

거스: 그 여자애가 고양이를 어떻게 죽였는데?

BEN. She―

걔가−

He picks up the paper and studies it. 신문을 집어 들고 찬찬히 들여다본다.

It doesn't say.²¹⁾

그건 안 나와 있네.

GUS. Why not?

거스: 왜 없어?

BEN. Wait a minute. It just says ― Her brother, aged eleven, viewed the incident from the toolshed.

벤: 잠깐 기다려봐. 뭐라고만 나왔느냐면—그 애 오빠는 11살인데 공구실에서 사건을 목격했다.

GUS. Go on!

거스: 허튼 소리!

BEN. That's bloody²²⁾ ridiculous.

벤: 정말 터무니없는 일이구만.

[Pause]

(사이)

☞ 사이(pause): 대사나 극적 흐름의 의도적인 일시적 휴지(休止)를 말한다. 대사 없이 등장인물의 얼굴이나 신체의 반응에 관객의 주의를 집중시켜 관객에게 생각할 여유를 준다. 지극히 극적인 성격을 유지한 채 상황을 전환하는 하나의 형식이다. 따라서 이 ‘사이’와 이 보다 더 긴 침묵은 적절히 조절할 필요가 있으며 배우들이 연기 중에 빈번히 ‘사이’를 이용할 수도 있다. ‘사이’는 배우들이 극의 효과를 높이기 위해 응용할 수 있지만 모든 배우가 필요 이상으로 ‘사이’를 취하는 것은 지양할 필요가 있다. 영국의 부조리 극작가인 해럴드 핀터의 극을 연출한 영국의 연출가이자 국립극장장인 피터 홀에 의하면 ‘사이’는 배우와 관객을 이어주는 일종의 다리로서 관객이 배우를 강 이쪽에 있다고 볼 수 있도록 해준다. 사이 이후에 배우가 다시 대사를 전하면 이제 관객은 배우가 강의 저쪽에 있다고 생각할 수 있다. 에디스 에번스에 따르면 ‘사이’는 그 다음에 이어지는 배우의 대사보다 더 흥미로워야 된다.

GUS. I bet²³⁾ he did it.

거스: 분명 그가 죽였을 거야.

BEN. Who?

벤: 누구?

GUS. The brother.

거스: 그 애 오빠 말이야.

BEN. I think you're right.

벤: 내 생각도 그래.

[Pause]

(사이)

[Slamming down the paper] What about that, eh? A kid of eleven killing a cat and blaming it on his little sister of eight! It's enough to―

(신문을 탁 내려놓으며) 그 일에 대해 어떻게 생각해? 11살짜리 녀석이 고양이를 죽이고 8살짜리 여동생에게 죄를 뒤집어씌우다니! 토하고 싶을—

☞ 영어 원문으로 It's enough to—로 끝나지만 문맥상, 그리고 극의 성격상 "It's enough to make you want to puke, isn't it?" 이라는 대사의 반복이 끊긴 것으로 이해해야 한다.

[He breaks off²⁴⁾ in disgust and seizes the paper. Gus rises.]

(벤은 역겨운 나머지 말을 갑자기 중단하고 신문을 꽉 쥔다. 거스가 일어선다)

GUS. What time is he getting in touch?²⁵⁾

[Ben reads.]

BEN. What's the matter with you? It could be any time. Any time.

GUS. [moves to the foot of Ben's bed] Well, I was going to ask you something.

거스: (벤의 침대 발치로 가서는) 있잖아. 나 물어볼 게 있어.

BEN. What?

벤: 뭔데?

GUS. Have you noticed the time that tank takes to fill?

거스: 탱크가 가득 찼던 때를 본 적 있어?

BEN. What tank?

벤: 무슨 탱크?

GUS. In the lavatory.

거스: 화장실에 있는.

BEN. No. Does it?

벤: 아니. 그거 차 있잖아?

GUS. Terrible.²⁶⁾

거스: 끔찍해.

BEN. Well, what about it?

벤: 음, 그게 어때서?

GUS. What do you think's the matter with it?

거스: 무슨 탈이 난거라고 생각해?

BEN. Nothing.

벤: 아무 문제없어.

GUS. Nothing?

거스: 아무 문제없다고?

BEN. It's got a deficient ballcock,²⁷⁾ that's all.

벤: 부구(浮球) 마개 결함 때문이야. 그게 다야.

GUS. A deficient what?

거스: 결함이 있는 게 뭐라고?

BEN. Ballcock.

벤: 부구 마개.

GUS. No? Really?

거스: 그럴 리가. 정말?

BEN. That's what I should say.

벤: 내 말 맞아.

GUS. Go on! That didn't occur to me.

그럴 리가! 그런 생각은 떠오르지 않았는데.

[Gus wanders to his bed and presses the mattress.]

(거스는 어슬렁어슬렁 침대로 가서 매트리스를 누른다)

I didn't have a very restful sleep today, did you? It's not much of a bed.²⁸⁾ I could have done with another blanket too.²⁹⁾ [He catches sight of a picture on the wall.] Hello, what's this? [Peering at it] First Eleven.”³⁰⁾ Cricketers. You seen this, Ben?

난 오늘 잠을 충분히 자지 못했어. 자넨? 침대 쿠션이 안 좋아서 그래. 담요나 한 장 더 있었으면 좋았을 텐데. (벽에 걸린 그림을 본다.) 이봐, 이건 뭐지? (찬찬히 들여다보며) 11명의 크리켓 선발 출전자들이라. 이거 본 적 있어, 벤?

BEN. [reading] What?

벤: (신문을 읽으며) 뭐?

GUS. The first eleven.

거스: 선발 11명.

BEN. What?

벤: 뭐라고?

GUS. There's a photo here of the first eleven.

거스: 선발 출전 11명 사진이 여기 있다고.

BEN. What's first eleven?

벤: 무슨 11명?

GUS. [studying the photo] It doesn't say.

벤: (사진을 면밀히 살피며) 뭔지는 나와 있지 않아.

BEN. What about that tea?

벤: 차는 어떻게 됐어?

GUS. The all look a bit old to me.

[Gus wanders downstage, looks out front, then all about the room.]

I wouldn't like to live in this dump. I wouldn't mind if you had a window, you could see what it looked like outside.

거스: 내겐 이 사람들 다 나이가 지긋해 보여.

(거스는 무대 앞쪽으로 천천히 걸어 나가 전면을 내다본 다음 방 전체를 휘 둘러본다.)

이 쓰레기 같은 곳에서 살기 싫다. 네 방에 창문이라도 있으면 좋을 텐데. 그러면 바깥이 어떤지 좀 볼 수도 있을 텐데.

BEN. What do you want the window for?

벤: 창문은 있어서 뭐해?

GUS. Well, I like to have a bit of a view, Ben. It whiles away³¹⁾ the time.

거스: 글쎄, 난 경치가 보이는 것이 좋거든, 벤. 적당히 시간을 보낼 수 있잖아.

[He walks about the room.]

I mean, you come into a place when it's still dark, you come into a room you've never seen before, you sleep all day, you do your job, and then you go away in the night again.³²⁾

(그는 방 안을 이리저리 걸어다닌다)

내 말은, 여전히 캄캄한 새벽녘에야 어딘가 들어가서 생전 처음 보는 방에 들어가고 하루 종일 잠자다가 일을 하고는 밤이 되면 다시 떠나가 버린다는 말인데.

☞ 자기들이 하는 일의 양상을 설명한 대목

[Pause]

I like to get a look at the scenery. You never get the chance in this job.

(사이)

난 경치를 보고 싶어. 이 일을 하면서는 그런 기회가 없다고.

BEN. You get your holidays, don't you?

벤: 넌 쉬는 날이 있잖아, 안 그래?

GUS. Only a fortnight.

거스: 겨우 14일 뿐이야.

BEN. [lowering the paper] You kill me.³³⁾ Anyone would think you're working every day. How often do we do a job? Once a week? What are you complaining about?

벤: (신문을 내리며) 아유, 죽겠네. 네 말을 들으면 다들 네가 매일 일하는 줄 알겠다. 우리가 얼마나 자주 일을 하지? 일주일에 한 번? 그런데 넌 뭐가 불만이라는 거지?

GUS. Yes, but we've got to be on tap³⁴⁾ though, haven't we? You can't move out of the house in case a call comes.³⁵⁾

거스: 그래, 하지만 언제든 대기하고 있어야 하잖아, 안 그래? 연락이 올 때를 대비해서 집밖으로 나갈 수가 없잖아.

BEN. You know what your trouble is?

벤: 네 문제가 뭔지 알아?

GUS. What?

거스: 뭔데?

BEN. You haven't got any interests.

벤: 취미가 하나도 없다는 거야.

GUS. I've got interests.

거스: 나도 취미는 있어.

BEN. What? Tell me one of your interests.

벤: 뭔데? 하나만 말해봐.

GUS. I've got interests.

거스: 나도 취미는 있어.

BEN. Look at me. What have I got?

벤: 나 좀 봐봐. 나는 어떤 관심거리를 가지고 있게?

GUS. I don't know. What?

거스: 몰라. 뭔데?

BEN. I've got my woodwork. I've got my model boats. Have you ever seen me idle? I'm never idle. I know how to occupy my time, to its best advantage. Then when a call comes, I'm ready.

벤: 난 목공에 관심이 있어. 모형 보트도 가지고 있지. 내가 빈둥빈둥 거리는 걸 본적 있어? 난 절대 빈둥거리지 않아. 난 시간을 최대한 잘 활용할 수 있는 방법을 알지. 그러다 전화가 오면 언제든 나갈 수 있지.

GUS. Don't you ever get a bit fed up?³⁶⁾

거스: 넌 지금껏 싫증 난 적 없어?

BEN. Fed up? What?

[Ben reads. Gus feels³⁷⁾ in the pocket of his jacket, which hangs on the bed.]

(벤은 신문을 읽는다. 거스는 침대에 걸쳐 있는 윗도리 주머니 안을 더듬어 무엇인가를 찾는다.)

GUS. You got any cigarettes? I've run out.

[The lavatory flushes off left.]

There she goes.³⁸⁾

[Gus sits on his bed.]

No, I mean, I say crockery's good. It's very nice. But that's all I can say for this place. It's worse than the last one. Remember that last place we were in? At least there was a wireless there. No, honest. He doesn't seem to bother much about our comfort these days.³⁹⁾

거스: 담배 있어? 난 다 떨어졌는데.

(화장실에서 물 내리는 소리가 난다)

또 시작이군.

(거스는 침대에 앉는다)

아니, 내 말은 그릇이 좋다고. 정말 좋아. 그러나 이 집에 대해서 좋은 점이라고 할 만한 건 그게 다야. 지난 번 집보다 더 나쁘네. 지난번에 머물렀던 집 생각나? 적어도 거긴 무전기 같은 거라도 있었는데. 아니지, 솔직히 말해서, 최근엔 그가 우리의 편익에 대해 별로 신경을 쓰지 않는 것 같아.

BEN. When are you going to stop jabbering?

벤: 언제까지 지껄일 거야?

GUS. You'd get rheumatism in a place like this, if you stay long.

거스: 이런 집에선 오래 있다간 류머티즘에 걸리고 말 걸.

BEN. We're not staying long. Make the tea, will you? We'll be on the job in a minute.

벤: 여기 오래 있지 않을 거야. 차나 끓여오지 그래? 곧 일을 시작하게 될 테니.

[Gus picks up a small bag by his bed and brings out a packet of tea. He examines it and looks up.]

(거스는 침대 옆에 있던 작은 가방을 집어 들고 차 봉지를 꺼낸다. 이리저리 살펴보고는 고개를 든다)

GUS. Eh, I've been meaning to ask you.

거스: 아, 나 물어보려고 했었는데.

BEN. What the hell⁴⁰⁾ is it now?

벤: 그 빌어먹을 질문이 뭔데?

GUS. Why did you stop the car this morning, in the middle of that road?

거스: 오늘 아침에 왜 길 한가운데에서 차를 세웠어?

BEN. [lowering the paper] I thought you were asleep.

벤: (신문을 내려놓으며) 네가 잠든 줄 알고 그랬어.

In the middle of that road. It was still dark, don't you remember? I looked out. It was all misty. I thought perhaps you wanted to kip,¹⁾ but you were sitting up dead²⁾ straight, like you were waiting for something.

BEN. I wasn't waiting for anything.

GUS. I must have fallen asleep again. What was all that about then?³⁾ Why did you stop?

[벤] (신문을 내리며) 난 네가 자고 있다고 생각했어.

[거스] 자고 있었지만 그러나 네가 차를 멈추었을 때 깼어. 멈춰 섰던 거 아니야?

(사이) 길 한복판에. 여전히 주위는 어두웠어. 기억나지 않아? 나는 밖을 내다보았지. 안개가 가득했지. 난 아마 네가 자고 싶어 그러는 줄 알았지. 그러나 넌 그대로 앉아있었어. 죽은 사람처럼 똑바로. 넌 마치 무엇인가를 기다리고 있는 것 같았어.

[벤] 아무것도 기다리고 있던 건 아냐.

[거스] 다시 깊이 잠들었던가봐. 도대체 그때 무엇 때문이었지? 왜 차를 멈추었어?

BEN. [picking up the paper] We were too early.

GUS. Early? [He rises.] What do you mean? We got the call, didn't we, saying we were to start right away. We did. We shoved out on the dot.⁴⁾ So how could we be too early?

[벤] (신문을 집어 들며) 시간이 너무 일렀거든

I don't want to share my bed-sheets. I told you things were going down the drain.⁸⁾ I mean, we've always had clean sheets laid on up till now. I've noticed it.

GUS. What, you mean it might be my pong? [He sniffs sheets.] Yes. [He sits slowly on bed.] It could be my pong, I suppose. It's difficult to tell. I don't really know what I pong like, that's the trouble.

BEN. They're playing away.

GUS. No, are they? Caarr! What a pity.

GUS. Well, we have done in the past, haven't we? Stayed over and watched a game, haven't we? For a bit of relaxation.¹²⁾

BEN. Things have tightened up, mate. They've tightened up.

[Gus chuckles to himself.]

Talk about drama.¹⁵⁾ Yes, it was a disputed penalty. Disputed. They got beat two-one, anyway, because of it. You were there yourself.

BEN. Not me.

[벤] 난 없었어.

[거스] 너도 있었다니깐 그 말썽 많았던 페널티가 기억 안나?

[벤] 기억 안나.

GUS. He went down just inside the area.¹⁶⁾ Then they said he was just acting¹⁷⁾ I didn't think the other bloke¹⁸⁾ touched him myself. But the referee had the ball on the spot.

BEN. Didn't touch him! What are you talking about? He laid him out flat!¹⁹⁾

GUS. Not the Villa. The villa don't play that sort of game.

BEN. Get out of it.²⁰⁾

[Pause]

GUS. Eh, that must have been here, in Birmingham.

BEN. What must?

GUS. The Villa. That must have been here.

GUS. Because you know who the other team was? It was the Spurs. It was Tottenham Hostspurs.

GUS. We've never done a job in Tottenham.

[Ben turns on his bed to look at him.]

BEN. Don't make me laugh, will you?

[Ben turns back and reads. Gus yawns and speaks through his yawn.]

GUS. When's he going to get in touch?²²⁾

Yes, I'd like to see another football match. I've always been an ardent²³⁾ football fan. here, what about coming to see the Spurs tomorrow?

BEN. What?

GUS. Look.

[Ben turns his head and sees the envelope. He stands.]

[Gus passes the envelope. Ben examines it.]

GUS. That's funny,²⁷⁾ isn't it?

[Gus takes the matches from pocket and looks at them.]

GUS. All the time.

BEN. The kettle.

GUS. You mean the gas.

BEN. Who does?

[Ben goes to his bed, but, realising what he has said, stops and half turns. They look at each other. Gus slowly exits, left. Ben slams his paper down on the bed and sits on it, head in hands.]

GUS. No. I was going to ask you something.

[He rises and sits on Ben's bed.]

BEN. What are you sitting on my bed for?

[Gus sits.]

What's the matter with you? You're always asking me questions. What's the matter with you?

GUS. Nothing.

[벤] 미치겠군. (다리를 침대에 올려놓으며)

[거스] 아니 그냥 물어 볼게 있었다고. (일어선다. 벤의 침대에 안는다 )

[벤] 내 침대엔 뭐 하러 앉는 거야. (거스 계속 앉아있다) 대관절 무슨 일이야?

넌 언제나 나에게 밑도 끝도 없는 질문을 던지고 있잖아. 무엇 때문에 그러냐고 말야?

[거스] 아무것도 아냐.

BEN. You never used to ask me so many damn questions.

GUS. No. I was just wondering.

BEN. Stop wondering. You've got a job to do. Why don't you just do it and shut up?

GUS. [tentatively] I thought perhaps you might know something.

[Ben looks at him.]

I thought perhaps you―I mean―have you got any idea―who it's going to be tonight?

[They look at each other.]

[거스] (주저하면서) 너는 무언가 알고 있는 것 같아서. (벤은 거스를 바라본다) 넌 아는 거 있잖아. 오늘밤 (우리가 하는 일이) 누가 될까? (우리가 오늘 처리해야 할 사람이 누구인지..)

[벤] 누가 되다니 무슨 말이야? (서로 바라본다)

GUS. [at length] Who it's going to be.

[Silence]

BEN. Are you feeling all right?

GUS. Sure.

BEN. Go and make the tea.

GUS. Yes, sure.

[Gus exits, left, Ben looks after him. He then takes his revolver from under the pillow and checks it for ammunition. Gus reenters.]

The gas has gone out.

BEN. Well, what about it?

GUS. There's a meter.

[거스] (드디어) 누구일까 (침묵)

[벤] 괜찮은 거야?

[거스] 물론

[벤] 가서 차나 만들어

BEN. I haven't got any money.

GUS. Nor have I.

BEN. You'll have to wait.

GUS. What for?

BEN. For Wilson.

GUS. He might not come. He might just send a message. He doesn't always come.

BEN. Well, you'll have to do without it, won't you?

GUS. Blimey.³⁹⁾

BEN. You'll have a cup of tea afterwards. What's the matter with you?

GUS. I like to have one before.

[Ben holds the revolver up to the light and polishes it.]

BEN. You'd better get ready anyway.

[벤] 차는 끝난 뒤에 마실 수도 있잖아? 그런데 왜 그래?

[거스] 나는 일 하기 전에 먼저 마시고 싶다고 (벤 권총을 불빛에 비쳐보며 닦는다)

[벤] 빨리 준비나 하지 그래

GUS. Well, I don't know, that's a bit much, you know, for my money.

[He picks up a packet of tea from the bed and throws it into the bag.]

I hope he's got a shilling, anyway, if he comes. He's entitled to have.⁴⁰⁾ After all, it's his place, he could have seen⁴¹⁾ there was enough gas for a cup of tea.

BEN. What do you mean, it's his place?⁴²⁾

GUS. Well, isn't it?

BEN. He's probably only rented it. It doesn't have to be his place.

[거스] 잘 모르겠지만, 너무 심한거 같아. 내가 생각하기에는--- (침대에서 차 한 봉지를 꺼낸다. 그것을 가방 속에 던져 넣는다) 어쨌든 윌슨이 온다면 1 실링 쯤 갖고 있겠지. 그는 그 정도라면 충분히 가지고 있을 거야. 어쨌든 여긴 윌슨의 방이고 차 한 잔 끓일 정도의 가스는 배려 해 놓을 수 있었을 텐데.

[거스] 그럼 아니야?

[벤] 단지 빌렸을 수도 있지. 이제 꼭 윌슨의 집이 아닐 수 있지.

GUS. I know it's his place. I bet the whole house is. He's not even laying on⁴³⁾ any gas now either.

[Gus sits on his bed.]

It's his place all right. Look at all the other places. You go to this address, there's a key there, there's a teapot, there's never a soul in sight―[He pauses.] Eh, nobody ever hears a thing, have you ever thought of that? We never get any complaints, do we, too much noise or anything like that? You never see a soul, do you?―except the bloke who comes. You ever noticed that? I wonder if the walls are sound-proof. [He touches the wall above his bed.] Can't tell. All you do is wait, eh? Half the time he doesn't even bother to put in an appearance,⁴⁴⁾ Wilson.

BEN. Why should he? He's a busy man.

GUS. [thoughtfully] I find him hard to talk to, Wilson. Do you know that, Ben?

BEN. Scrub round it, will you?⁴⁵⁾

[Pause]

GUS. There are a number of things I want to ask him. But I can never get round to it, when I see him.

[Pause]

I've been thinking about the last one.⁴⁶⁾

[Ben grabs the paper, which he reads.]

[Rising, looking down at Ben] How many times have you read that paper?

[Ben slams the paper down and rises.]

BEN. [angrily] What do you mean?

GUS. I was just wondering how many times you'd―

BEN. What are you doing, criticising me?

GUS. No, I was just―

BEN. I'm not looking anywhere! [He addresses the wall.⁴⁸⁾] How many times have I―! A bloody liberty!

GUS. I didn't mean that.

BEN. You just get on with it,⁴⁹⁾ mate. Get on with it, that's all.

[Ben gets back on the bed.]

(침대에 눕는다)

GUS. I was just thinking about that girl, that's all.

[Gus sits on his bed.]

She wasn't much to look at, I know, but still. It was a mess,⁵⁰⁾ though, wasn't it? What a mess, Honest, I can't remember a mess like that one.

[거스] 나는 단지 그 여자애를 생각 하고 있었어. 그게 전부야 (침대에 앉는다). 그녀는 그렇게 시선을 끄는 여자는 아니었어. 하지만 그래도. . . 엉망이었어. 지난번처럼 그렇게 엉망인 경우는 본적이 없어.

[Ben sits up and clenches his eyes.]

Who clears up after we've done? I'm curious about that.

Who does the clearing up? Maybe they don't clear up.

Maybe they just have them there, eh? What do you think?

How many jobs have we done? Blimey, I can't count them.

What if they never clear anything up after we've gone.

BEN. You birk!⁵⁴⁾

GUS. No, it was that girl made me start to think―

[벤] (불쌍하다는 듯) 야 돌대가리야! 이 조직에 우리만 있는 줄 알아?

상식을 좀 가져(생각 좀 해라). 모든 일에 다 부서가 있어.

[거스] 뒤처리를 맡는 사람이랑 다 있다는 거야?

There is a loud clatter and racket in the bulge of wall between the beds, of something descending. They grab their revolvers, jump up and face the wall. The noise comes to a stop. Silence. They look at each other. Ben gestures sharply towards the wall. Gus approaches the wall slowly. He bangs it with his revolver. It is hollow. Ben moves to the head of his bed, his revolver cocked. Gus puts his revolver on his bed and pats along the bottom of the centre panel. He finds a rim. He lifts the panel. Disclosed is a serving-hatch, a “dumb waiter.”⁵⁵⁾ A wide box is held by pulleys. Gus peers into the box. He brings out a piece of paper.

GUS. You have a look at it.

BEN. Read it.

GUS. [reading] Two braised steak and chips. Two sago⁵⁶⁾ puddings. Two teas without sugar.

BEN. Let me see that. [He takes the paper.]

[벤] 뭐야?

[거스] (니가) 봐

[벤] 읽어봐

[거스] (읽는다) 살짝 기름에 튀긴 스테이크와 감자튀김 2인분.

sago 푸딩 두 개. 설탕 넣지 않는 차 두잔.

[벤] 어디 한번 봐 (종이를 뺏는다)

GUS. [to himself] Two teas without sugar.

BEN. Mmnn.

GUS. What do you think of that?

BEN. Well―

[The box goes up. Ben levels his revolver.]

GUS. Give us a chance! They're in a hurry, aren't they?

[Ben reads the note. Gus looks over his shoulder.]

That's a bit―that's a bit funny, isn't it?

[거스] (혼잣말로) 설탕 넣지 않은 차 두잔 이라고?

[벤] 음

[거스] 어떻게 생각 해?

[벤] 음 (상자 올라간다. 벤 권총을 겨눈다)

[거스] 기회를 달라고. 너무 서두르는군. (벤 쪽지를 다시 읽는다. 거스는 등 뒤를 본다)

웃기지 않아?

BEN. [quickly] No. It's not funny. It probably used to be a cafe here, that's all. Upstairs. These places change hands quickly.⁵⁷⁾

GUS. A cafe?

[벤] (급하게) 뭐가 웃겨. 이곳은 카페였을지 몰라. (돌아서며) 이층은 말이야. 이런 장소는 쉽게 문을 닫든가 옳기는 편이지(주인이 쉽게 바뀌는 거지)

[거스] 카페?

BEN. Yes.

GUS. What, you mean this was the kitchen, down here?

BEN. Yes, they change hands everynight, these places. Go into liquidation.⁵⁸⁾ The people who run it, they don't find it a going concern⁵⁹⁾ they move out.

GUS. You mean the people who ran this place didn't find it a going concern and moved out?

BEN. Sure.

[벤] 그래

[거스] 그럼 여긴 주방이었단 말야?

[벤] 그렇지 이런 장소는 하루 밤 사이 주인이 바뀌기도 하지. 파산하고. 운영하던 사람들이 수익을 내지 못 한다고 생각하면 나가는 거지---

[거스] 이 카페를 경영하던 사람이 수익이 없어서 이사를 했다고?

[벤] 틀림없어

GUS. WELL. WHO'S GOT IT NOW?

[Silence]

BEN. What do you mean, who's got it now?

GUS. Who's got it now? If they moved out, who moved in?

BEN. Well, that all depends―

[The box descends with a clatter and bang. Ben levels⁶⁰⁾ his revolver. Gus goes to the box and brings out a piece of paper.]

[거스] 그럼 지금 주인은 누눌까?

(침묵)

[벤] 지금 주인이라니 무슨 말이야 ?

[거스] 지금 주인은 누구냐는 거지. 누군가 나갔으니 누군가 새로 들어 왔을 거 아냐?

[벤] 그건 상황에 따라...--- (소리를 내며 상자가 다시 내려온다. 벤 권총을 겨눈다. 거스는 상자 쪽으로 간다. 쪽지를 꺼낸다)

GUS. [reading] Soup of the day.⁶¹⁾ Liver and onions. Jam tart.

A pause. Gus looks at Ben. Ben takes the note and reads it. He walks slowly to the hatch. Gus follows. Ben looks into the hatch but not up it. Gus puts his hand on Ben's shoulder. Ben throws it off. Gus puts his finger to his mouth. He leans on the hatch and swiftly looks up it. Ben flings him away in alarm.⁶²⁾ Ben looks at the note. He throws his revolver on the bed and speaks with decision.⁶³⁾

[거스] (쪽지를 읽는다) 오늘의 스프. 양파를 곁들인 간 스프. 잼 타트 (사이) 거스가 벤을 본다. 벤 노트를 취하여 읽는다. 운반기 통용문 쪽으로 간다. 거스 따른다. 벤 통용문 안으로 들여다본다. 위에 아무것도 없는 게 확실한 모양이다. 거스 벤의 어깨에 한 손을 올려놓는다. 벤 거스의 손을 치워 버린다. 거스 손가락을 자기의 입속에 넣는다. 통용문에 기댄다. 급히 의를 쳐다본다. 벤 놀라 거스를 힘껏 밖으로 밀어 버린다. 벤 노트를 본다. 권총을 침대위로 던진다. 단호한 어투로 입을 연다)

BEN. We'd better send something up.

GUS. Eh?

BEN. We'd better send something up.

GUS. Oh! Yes. Yes. Maybe you're right.

[They are both relieved at the decision.]

BEN. [purposefully] Quick! What have you got in that bag?

[벤] 뭘 좀 올려 보내야 겠군.

[거스] 어?

[벤] 뭘 좀 올려 보내야 겠다고.

[거스] 오! 오! 그래, 그래. 어쩜 너의 말이 맞겠다. (둘다 이 결정에 안도의 감정을 느낀다)

[벤] (결의에 차서) 빨리! 그 가방에 무엇이 들었지?

GUS. Not much.

[Gus goes to the hatch and shouts up it.]

Wait a minute!

BEN. Don't do that!

[Gus examines the contents of the bag and brings them out, one by one.]

GUS. Biscuits. A bar of chocolate. Half a pint⁶⁴⁾ of milk.

BEN. That all?

GUS. Packet of tea.

BEN. Good.

GUS. We can't send the tea. That's all the tea we've got.

[거스] 별것 없어 (해치로 가서 통로를 향해 소리친다) 잠간만 기다려!

[벤] 그런 짓 하지 마 (거스 가방속의 내용물을 살피고 하나 둘 꺼낸다)

[거스] 비스킷, 초콜릿 바, 우유 한 통.

[벤] 그게 전부야?

[거스] 차 한 봉지

[벤] 됐어

[거스] 차는 보낼 수 없어. 이게 우리가 가진 모두야

BEN. Well, there's no gas. You can't do anything with it, can you?

BEN. One Eccles cake?

GUS. Yes.

BEN. You never told me you had an Eccles cake.

GUS. Didn't I?

BEN. Why only one? Didn't you bring one for me?

BEN. Well, you can't send up one Eccles cake, anyway.

GUS. Why not?

[Gus goes towards the door, left, and stops.]

BEN. Keep it?

GUS. Well, they don't know we've got it, do they?

BEN. That's not the point.

[벤] 쟁반 하나 가지고 와

[거스] 그러지 (왼쪽 문으로 가서 멈춘다) 그러면 에클스 케이크는 내가 챙겨도 된단 말이지?

[벤] 챙기다니?

[거스] 어쨌든 우리가 에클스 케이크를 가지고 있는 걸 저자들은 모르고 있으니까

[벤] 내 말은 그게 아냐

GUS. Can't I keep it?

BEN. No, you can't. Get the plate.

[Gus exits, left. Ben looks in the bag. He brings out a packet of crisps. Enter Gus with a plate.]

[Accusingly, holding up the crisps⁶⁸⁾] Where did these come from?

[거스] 그럼 내가 챙길 수 없나?

[벤] 안돼. 어서 저 쟁반을 가져 와 (거스 왼쪽으로 퇴장) (벤 가방 안을 본다. 과자봉지를 하나 꺼낸다. 쟁반을 가지고 거스 등장. 과자 봉지를 들고서 꾸짖듯이) 이건 어디서 났지?

GUS. What?

BEN. Where did these crisps come from?

GUS. Where did you find them?

BEN. [hitting him on the shoulder] You're playing a dirty game, my lad!

GUS. I only eat those with beer!

BEN. Well, where were you going to get the beer?

GUS. I was saving them till I did.⁶⁹⁾

[거스] 뭐 말이야?

[벤] 이 과자 어디서 났느냐니깐?

BEN. I'll remember this. Put everything on the plate.

[They pile everything on the plate. The box goes up without the plate.]

Wait a minute!

[They stand.]

GUS. It's gone up.

BEN. It's all your stupid fault, playing about!

GUS. What do we do now?

[벤] 알겠어. 쟁반에 다 올려놔

(두 사람은 꺼내놓은 모든 것을 쟁반에 쌓는다. 쟁반도 없이 상자가 올라가 버리고 만다) 잠깐 기다려!

(두 사람은 바로 선다)

[거스] 올라가 버렸어

[벤] 모두 너 때문이야 그 바보 같은 장난으로 네가 시간을 낭비했기 때문이야!

[거스] 그럼 이제 우린 어떻게 하지?

BEN. We'll have to wait till it comes down.

[Ben puts the plate on the bed, puts on his shoulder holster,⁷⁰⁾ and starts to put on his tie.]

You'd better get ready.

[Gus goes to his bed, puts on his tie, and starts to fix his holster.]

[벤] 상자가 다시 내려 올 때까지 기다리는 수밖에 없어 (벤 쟁반을 침대 위에 놓는다. 어깨 권총 케이스를 두른다. 넥타이를 맨다) 너도 빨리 준비 해 (거스 자기의 침대로 간다. 넥타이를 맨다. 권총집을 찬다)

GUS. Hey, Ben.

BEN. What?

GUS. What's going on here?

[Pause]

[거스] 야, 벤

[벤] 뭐?

[거스] 무슨 일이 벌어지고 있는 거지?

A. Plot Summary 줄거리 요약

In a basement with a kitchen and beds Ben reads a newspaper while Gus ties his shoelaces. Gus walks to the kitchen door, then stops and takes a flattened matchbox¹⁾ out of one shoe, and a flattened cigarette carton out of the other. He puts both items in his pocket and leaves for the bathroom. There's a sound of the toilet chain being pulled without it flushing,²⁾ and Gus returns. Ben reports to Gus a newspaper article about a truck running over an elderly man.³⁾ Ben orders Gus to make tea. Gus hopes, "it won't be a long job."⁴⁾ Ben reports on an article about a child who kills a cat. Gus asks if Ben has noticed how long it takes for the toilet tank to fill.

Gus complains he didn't sleep well on the bed, and wishes that there were a window. He laments that his life revolves around sleeping all day in an unfamiliar, dark room, then performing a job, and then leaving at night. Ben tells him they are fortunate to be employed. Gus asks if Ben ever gets fed up,⁵⁾ but they soon fall silent. The toilet finally flushes. Ben commands him to make tea, as they will go to work very soon. Gus asks Ben why he stopped the car that morning in the middle of the road. Ben says they were early.⁶⁾ Ben tells Gus they are in the city of Birmingham. Gus wants to watch the Birmingham soccer team tomorrow (Saturday), but Ben says that there is no time and that they have to get back. Gus speaks about a Birmingham game they once saw together, but Ben denies it. An envelope slides under the door.

Neither one knows what is in the envelope. Ben orders Gus to pick it up and open it. He does, and empties out⁷⁾ twelve matches. They are confused, and Ben commands Gus to open the door and see if anyone is outside. With a revolver for protection, Gus finds no one. Gus says the matches will come in handy,⁸⁾ as he always runs out.⁹⁾ Ben tells him to light the kettle instead. They debate the phrase "light the kettle." Gus feels one should say the "gas," since that is what is being lit, or "put on the kettle," a phrase his mother used. Ben denies this and challenges Gus to remember the last time he saw his mother. After further arguments about the phrase,¹⁰⁾ in which Ben reminds Gus that he has seniority,¹¹⁾ Ben chokes Gus and screams "THE KETTLE, YOU FOOL!"

Gus acquiesces¹²⁾ and tries to see if the matches will light. They don't light on the flattened box, but they work on his foot. Ben says, "Put on the bloody kettle," then realizes he has used Gus's phrase. He then stares at Gus until he leaves. Gus comes back, having lit the kettle, and wonders, "who it'll be tonight." He says he wants to ask Ben something, and sits on Ben's bed, which annoys him. Ben asks Gus why he barrages¹³⁾ him with so many questions, and tells him to do his job and shut up. After Gus repeatedly asks who it's going to be tonight and a moment of silence, Ben orders him to make tea. After he leaves, Ben checks his revolver under his pillow for ammunition.¹⁴⁾

Gus returns and says that the gas has gone out and the meter needs to be refilled with coins.¹⁵⁾ Ben says they'll have to wait for Wilson.¹⁶⁾ Gus says that Wilson doesn't always come―he sometimes sends only a message. Gus argues that since no one ever hears anything, Wilson must own all the places they go to; Ben says Wilson rents them. Gus also finds it hard to talk to Wilson, and says he's been thinking about the "last one"¹⁷⁾―a girl. He remembers the job was a "mess." He wonders who "clears up" after they leave. Ben reminds him that there are many "departments" in their "organization" that take care of other matters.

They are interrupted by a sound from the wall.¹⁸⁾ They investigate and find a box on a dumb waiter.¹⁹⁾ Gus pulls a piece of paper out, and reads out an order for food. The dumb waiter ascends. Ben explains that the upstairs used to be a café, the basement was the kitchen, and that these places change ownership quickly.²⁰⁾ The dumb waiter descends again, and Gus pulls out another order for food. Gus looks up the hatch, but Ben pushes him away. Ben decides they should send something up, but they have only a little food. They put everything on a plate, but the dumb waiter ascends²¹⁾ before they can put the plate on it. The box descends again with another order, this time for "high class" exotic food.²²⁾ They put the plate on and Gus calls up the brand names of the food.²³⁾ Ben tells him not to shout, as "It isn't done." Gus then discusses, without Ben's answering, his feelings of anxiety²⁴⁾ about the job and Wilson. Another order comes down the passage for more food with which they are unfamiliar. The packet of tea they sent up has also returned.

Ben decides they should write a note telling them they can't fill the orders, but then they notice an intercom tube.²⁵⁾ Gus yells into the tube that there is no food. Ben gives Gus the instructions for the job. They must corner the target²⁶⁾ with guns when he or she enters the room. Gus excuses himself to the bathroom, where the toilet again does not flush, and returns. He asks Ben who is upstairs. They argue, and Gus wants to know why they have to play these "games." Ben hits him twice on the shoulder. Another order comes, they fight again, and then they retreat into silence, Ben reading his newspaper, as the dumb waiter goes up and comes down again. Gus leaves to get a drink of water, and the speaking tube whistle blows.²⁷⁾ Ben listens through the tube and confirm‎s that it is time to do their job. He hangs up and calls for Gus. He levels²⁸⁾ his gun at the door and Gus stumbles in, vulnerably stripped of some of his clothes²⁹⁾ and his gun. He looks up at Ben, and they stare at each other through a long silence.
