Death, Be Not Proud
죽음이여, 뽐내지 말라
Death, be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so;
For those whom thou think'st thou dost overthrow
Die not, poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be,
Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow
And soonest our best men with thee do go,
Rest of their bones, and soul's delivery.
Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings and desperate men,
And dost with poison, war and sickness dwell,
And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well
And better than thy stroke; why swell'st thou then ?
One short sleep past, we wake eternally,
And death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die.
죽음이여 거만 떨지 말아라, 어떤 이들은 너를
강하고 두려운 것이라고 불렀지만은, 너는 그런 존재가 아니다;
그대가 생각하기에 정복시킨다고 여기는 사람들은
죽는 게 아니다, 불쌍한 죽음아, 넌 나도 죽일 수 없다.
죽음의 영상에 불과한 휴식과 잠으로부터,
큰 즐거움이 온다면; 너로부터는 훨씬 더 큰 즐거움이 나온다.
우리의 훌륭한 사람들도 기꺼이 너를 따라간다,
그들의 육체의 안식과 영혼의 해방을 위하여.
.너는 운명, 우연, 왕들, 그리고 절망한 자들의 노예이다.
그리고 너는 독약과 전쟁과 질병과 함께 산다.
그뿐인가, 아편이나 마법도 너의 일격만큼
또는 더 잘 우릴 잠들게 할 수 있다. 그런데 왜 뽐내느냐.
한차례 짧은 잠이 지나가면, 우리는 영원히 깨어난다.
그러면 죽음은 더 이상 없을 것. 죽음이여, 네가 죽으리라.
