Know then thyself, presume not God to scan;
그러니 너 자신을 알아라, 신을 결코 평가하려하지 말아라;
The proper study of mankind is man.
인간의 고유한 연구 분야는 인간이다.
placed on this isthmus of a middle state,
중간적 지위라는 이 지협에 위치해서
A being darkly wise and rudely great:
둔하게 현명하고 조잡하게 위대한 존재이다:
With too much knowledge for the skeptic side,
회의론자의 편이 되기에는 지식이 너무 많고,
With too much weakness for the Stoic's pride,
금욕자의 오만을 부리기에는 미약하다,
He hangs between; in doubt to act or rest,
한가운데 메달려 있다; 행동하기에도 쉬기에도 어느 쪽도 의심하며,
In doubt to deem himself a god or beast;
자신을 신적존재 동물로 간주하기에도 의심하며;
In doubt his mind or body to prefer,
그의 정신 혹은 육체 어느 쪽을 선호할지 의심하며
Born but to die, and reasoning but to err;
태어났지만 오로지 죽을 뿐이고, 사유하나 오류를 범할 뿐이다;
Alike in ignorance, his reason such,
한결 같이 무지상태에 있다, 그의 이성이 이러하니,
Whether he thinks too little or too much:
너무 적게 생각하나 너무 많이 생각하나 한결같이 오류를 범할 뿐이다:
Chaos of thought and passion, all confused;
사고와 감정의 혼돈 상태다, 매사가 뒤죽박죽이니;
(모든 것들이 뒤죽박죽이니 사고와 감정의 혼돈상태이다)
Still by himself abused or disabused;
그럼에도 불구하고(언제나) 스스로에게 속고 거기서 깨어난다;
Created half to rise, and half to fall;
반쯤 일어서고 반쯤 넘어지도록 창조된 존재;
Great lord of all things, yet a prey to all;
만물의 위대한 주인이면서 또한 만물의 희생물이다
Sole judge of truth, in endless error hurled:
진리의 유일한 판단자, 끝임 없는 오류 속에 내동댕이 쳐져 있다:
The glory, jest, and riddle of the world!
이세상의 영화여 우스광꺼리 조롱거리 이면서 결국은 수수깨끼 같은 존재이다!
