전 <그레이의 50가지 그림자>에 제의받았으나, 거절했어요. 글이 아주 형편없다고 생각했거든요.
"I was asked to go to a casting for Fifty Shades of Grey, but said, 'No'. I thought it was very badly written."
배우라면 선택했었을 <그레이의 50가지 그림자>, <300 제국의 부활>, <헤라클레스>같은 배역을 제안받았어요. 하지만 전 제가 좋아해서 하고 있는 일에 운이 좋은 편이여서 굳이 연기를 해야겠다는 필요를 못느끼고 있어요.
성공적인 영화에 출연하게 된다면 하룻밤 사이에 명성이 달라진다는 걸 알고 있어요. 저도 그게 싫다고는 말할 수 없겠네요. 제가 정말로 연기하고 싶은 몇가지를 읽고는 했지만 그런 역할은 제의가 들어오지 않더라구요. 평론가나 전문가들은 <그레이의 50가지 그림자>의 팬이 아니겠지만 어찌됐든 작품 자체는 존중하고 있어요. 하지만 그 역할이 저한테 맞냐고 하면요, 아니요. 저와 어울리지 않았을 거에요. 직감적으로 거절해야겠다 생각했어요.
"I was offered Fifty Shades of Grey, 300: Rise of an Empire, Hercules, which a lot of people probably would have taken as actors but I'm in the fortunate position where I like what I'm doing. I don't feel the need to act," he told Square Mile. "I know if you're in a successful film, your status changes overnight. And I'm not saying I wouldn't, I've read many parts that I'd love to play, things that I've chosen, though, not things that've been sent. Critics and literary experts aren't fans of Fifty Shades of Grey but I respect it for what it is. But was it right for me? No. It just didn't feel right, in any way. And in my gut, it felt right to say no."
