At first, this began as nothing more than a supplementary explanation for the seven-part series on the Meta-Language.

However, as I continued organizing and refining the material, it gradually became something more.

If the original seven parts explained individual trees, this supplementary work became a map of the entire forest.

Looking back, I realized that the many articles I have written over the years were not separate topics at all.

They were all connected by a single flow.

Sword (劍)
Kimu
Healing
Energy Flow
Follow the Energy
The Center of the Body and the Zero Point of the Mind
Mu-Ui-Dong-Won (Martial Arts and Medicine Share the Same Source)
Training for Survival
Searching for the Forgotten Half in Martial Arts

All of these ideas ultimately converge into a single sentence:

“One may start training to learn the sword, but eventually realizes that the true purpose of training is to understand oneself.”

This is not merely a quotation or a slogan.

It encapsulates the purpose of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Haedong Kumdo,
the purpose of Kimu training,
the purpose of healing,
and ultimately, the purpose of life itself.

For this reason, this supplementary work is not simply an appendix.

It can just as well serve as
“An Introduction to the Meta-Language”
or
“A Guide to Understanding the Meta-Language.”

Most importantly, I believe it successfully fulfills the goal of presenting these ideas through language and explanations that are relevant and understandable to modern people.

The sword is only the beginning.

To understand the body,
to understand the mind,
and ultimately, to understand oneself— that is the true journey of training.

■ Subject: Supplementary Notes for the 7 Parts of Meta-Language of JSKR Haedong Kumdo

《One may start training to learn the sword, but eventually realizes that the true purpose of training is to understand oneself.》

《사람은 검을 배우기 위해 수련을 시작하지만, 결국 수련의 진정한 목적은 자기 자신을 이해하는 데 있음을 깨닫게 된다.》

■ Introduction

The meta-language of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Haedong Kumdo was not created merely to explain martial arts techniques.

This writing was created to help people better understand both the visible and invisible aspects of life, and to encourage them to reflect upon their own existence and direction.

Throughout human history, countless sages, philosophers, religious leaders, and enlightened individuals have delivered essentially the same message, despite differences in culture, time, and tradition.

That message is that living each moment to the fullest, wherever one stands in life at this very moment, is among the most meaningful and valuable choices a human being can make.

Yet even today, many people continue to live amidst ignorance, greed, fear, and attachment.

They are often swept away by superstitious, unrealistic, irrational, or misleading ideas and phenomena, causing them to lose sight of their true nature and the direction of their lives.

The meta-language of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Haedong Kumdo emerged from this concern.

This meta-language organizes the recurring experiences found in martial arts training—the changes of body and mind, the growth of awareness, and the principles of life itself—into concepts and expressions that are easier for modern people to understand.

Martial artists, in particular, use their own bodies and minds as tools of training. Without understanding these principles, one may improve technically while still missing the deeper purpose and direction of practice.

In this sense, this work is not merely a martial arts theory. It is intended to serve as a guide and a lamp for those seeking to understand themselves and find a meaningful direction in life.

It is also an attempt to present martial arts, life, body, mind, and the principles of nature in a language and style suitable for people living in the twenty-first century.

Based on these concerns and aspirations, I published the book Searching for the Forgotten Half in Martial Arts.

This book explores the “other half” of martial arts that has often been neglected in modern training—namely the understanding of body and mind, awareness and healing, and the deeper purpose of human life.

Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu Haedong Kumdo seeks to explain this forgotten half through concepts and expressions that modern people can understand and apply.

The meta-language is one of the practical tools created for that purpose.

I hope that readers will not merely read these words, but will verify and experience them directly through their own training and daily lives.

Only then will the meta-language cease to be merely a collection of words and become a living experience.

■ Supplementary Notes

Understanding the Purpose and Structure of the Meta-Language

The seven-part series titled Read the Meta-Language of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu HK was written to help practitioners understand the deeper principles that exist behind the techniques of martial arts training.

However, before exploring each individual concept, it is important to understand what is meant by the term “meta-language” and why such a system was developed.

■ What is the Meta-Language of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu?

The meta-language of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu is a conceptual framework created to describe and interpret the recurring experiences that arise during martial arts, Kimu, and healing training.

Each term is not merely a theory or philosophical expression‎.

Rather, it is a practical language developed from direct experience, observation, and repeated verification through training.

In other words, the meta-language functions as a map that helps practitioners understand where they are, what they are experiencing, and what direction they should move toward next.

■ Data Collection and Data Editing

One of the important concepts frequently mentioned throughout this series is “data collection and data editing.”

These terms do not refer to computer data.

Instead, they refer to the accumulation and interpretation of personal experience.

Data Collection: The continuous gathering of information through training, observation, sensation, movement, breathing, success, failure, and interaction.

Data Editing: The process of organizing, comparing, interpreting, and understanding those experiences.

Through this process, experience gradually transforms into wisdom.
Repeated experiences become patterns.

Patterns become understanding.
Understanding becomes insight.
Insight eventually changes behavior and consciousness.

■ What is Energy Flow?

Among all the concepts introduced in this series, Energy Flow may be the most important.

Energy Flow does not refer to a single phenomenon.

Some practitioners perceive it as the movement of Ki (energy).

Others experience it as continuity of movement, balance, concentration, relaxation, awareness, or connection between body and mind.

For this reason,
Energy Flow may be understood as:

"The natural continuity and direction of movement, awareness, and life itself."

Because every movement begins from this flow, Energy Flow becomes the foundation of sword training, Kimu training, and healing practice.

Without understanding Energy Flow, it becomes difficult to fully understand concepts such as Feel & Connect, Balance & Harmony, Energy Block & Unblock, and Healing.

■ The Relationship Between the Meta-Languages

The concepts introduced throughout this series are not separate ideas.

They form an interconnected system.

A simplified progression may be understood as follows:

Energy Flow

Feel & Connect

Balance & Harmony

Energy Block & Unblock

Healing

Awareness

Transformation

Each stage supports and deepens the next.

The purpose is not merely to understand the concepts intellectually, but to experience them directly through practice.

■ What is Meant by Enlightenment?

In Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu, enlightenment does not necessarily refer to a mystical or religious experience.

It is often a process of recognizing relationships that were previously unseen.

Through repeated observation and practice, practitioners begin to understand the connection between body, mind, movement, energy, and life.

This gradual realization is what is referred to as awakening or enlightenment.

■ Why Does Sword Training Relate to Life?

Some people may ask:
"What does sword training have to do with everyday life?"

The answer is simple.
The sword itself is not the final goal.
The sword is a tool.
Through the sword, we learn about the body.
Through the body, we learn about the mind.
Through the mind, we learn about nature.
Through nature, we learn about ourselves.

Therefore, the ultimate purpose of sword training is not the sword itself, but self-understanding and the cultivation of a balanced and meaningful life.

■ Final Remarks

The meta-language of Jinyoung Ssangkum Ryu was developed to help practitioners interpret and understand the countless experiences that arise during training.

Its purpose is not to replace practice, but to illuminate practice.

The sword trains the body.
The body reveals the mind.
The mind perceives the flow.

The flow returns to nature.
And through this process, practitioners discover a deeper understanding of themselves and of life itself.

■ Closing Thought

The meta-language is not intended to be memorized.

It is intended to be experienced.

The deeper one's training becomes, the deeper the meaning of each term reveals itself.

What begins as words gradually becomes experience.

What begins as experience gradually becomes understanding.

And what becomes understanding eventually transforms one's life.
