“사제미! 저어~기, 국경 검문소가 보여요.”

“오! 나도 봤어요.”

나는 곧 총과 잔여물들을 정리하고 창문을 활짝 열었다. 화약냄새가 남아 있지 않도록.

“사제미! 국경이 열려 있어요. 이곳도 큐잌스(Q-Extinction-중성뇌파 바이러스)가 점령했나 봐요. 모두들 쓰러져 있어요.”

“서지 말고 그대로 계속 달려요. 피죤 강을 건너 하이웨이 61번을 타고 계속 사우스로 갑니다.”

총소리가 나고 폭파소리가 들렸지만 사방은 고요하였다. 바람도 자고 있었다. 전형적인 가을 날이었다. 국경선을 건너며 전개되는 장면은 참혹하였다. 마스크로도 막을 수 없었다. 그러나 대부분의 죽은 사람들은 마스크를 쓰고 있었다. 사람들은 차밖이나 도로 위 건물 위와 건물 입구와 계단 등에 쓰러져 있었다. 대부분 젊은 사람들로 보였다. 이런 상황에 어떻게 여권 생각이 나겠는가? 우리는 맥칸 없이 앞만 보며 그렌드 포테이지(Grand Portage)를 지나 도로를 따라 계속 앞으로 나아갔다. 차창으로 들어오는 신선하고 상쾌한 이 공기가 우리를 죽였어야 하는데… 그러지를 못하고 그대로 뒤창으로 빠져 나갔다. 내 생각을 안 듯이 체시로가 나를 보며 미소 지었다. 저 놈의 미소 때문에 내가 여기까지 오게 된 것이리라.

“사제미. 이제 어떡할 거예요? 어디로갈까요?”

“아. 체시로. 여기서 다시 자리를 바꿔요. 그리고 컴퓨팅을 하십시요. 제 보다 그 다음 할일을 더 잘 알지요? 제 생각에는 저 쪽 우측편에 체시로가 말한 G90이 있는 험한 곳이 있을 것 같습니다.”

“알겠어요. 저도 미네소타에 있다고는 알고 있었지만, 확실한 곳은 몰라요. 그러나 좀 전에 이곳 어디엔가 G90이 있을거라 생각해요. 제가 찾아 낼 게요.”

우리가 자리를 바꾼 후 20분 정도 갔을 때, Minnesota의 코빌(Coville)을 막 지나자 체시로가 외쳤다.

“헤에이! 사제미. 건플린트 트레일(Gun Flint Trail)을 놓치지 말아요! 우린 그 길로 가야되요. 그렌드 마리아스(Grand Marias) 타운 안 어디인가 우측에이글길이 있어요. 제가 이 차안 스크린에 GPS를 연결했어요. 여기 나왔어요! 사제미!”

체시로는 흥분하여 끝임없이 말하고 있었다.

그렇게 코빌을 지나고 크랍빌(Croftville)을 지나고 Chippewa City를 지나며 우리는 잠시 이 상황을 잊어버렸다. 체시로가 배가 고프다고 하자 나 또한 허기를 느껴 시 외곽의 나뭇잎이 하늘을 가린 도로변 공터에 차를 세웠다. 시각은오후 8시가 가까워졌다. 급히 일회용 버너의 불을 켜고 냄비에 음료수가 든 패트병 2개의 물로 냄비를 채우고 라면 2개를끓였다. 체시로는 곁에서 보고만 있었다. 이건 내 전공이거든. 금수저 같은 지가 이런 생용제식(生用製食)을 어찌 알 것인가?

“왜? 무슨 일인가요?”

거의 라면을 다 먹을 무렵, 체시로의 얼굴에 땀이 흥건해 지며 기침을 하기 시작하였다. 그 고약한 증세가 나타난 거다. 이건 뭔가 잘못된거다. 효과의 롱 라스팅(지속시간)이 이렇게 짧을 수가…

“사제미. 나 힘들어요. 증상이 심하게 나는가 봐요. 기침이 계속 나고 가슴이 아파요. 효력이 떨어지고 있는가 봐요. 어떡해요?”

그녀는 나를 보며 애처롭게 말했다. 이건 아니었다. 체시로와 나는 뭔가 잘못한 것이 있다. 특히 체시로가 뭘 빠트렸다거나 완전생성 과정이 부족하다는 생각이 들었다. 이렇게 작용하는 것은 치료나 예방 방법이 아닐 것이다. 그러나 그것을 따질 시간이 없었다. 나는 트렁크에서 돗자리를 꺼내 잔디밭에 깔았다. 그리고 체시로의 빽쌕에서 써드베리의 가게에서 체시로가 챙겨 온 빈 프라스틱 약병 중 하나를 가지고 왔다. 지나다니는 그 어떤 것도 없었다. 체시로는 얌전하였다.

“사제미. 당신을 사랑해요. 당신은 너무도 잘해요. 최고의 선수예요. 선수! 그리고 또 당신은 내 생명의 은인이예요.”

“흠. 그래서~ 사랑한다는 말씀이렸다~”

“그건 아니 예요. 저는 운명적 사랑이라 생각해요.”

그녀가 더 말하기 전에 내가 말을 끊었다.

“자. 움직입시다. 이제 운명적 사랑도 끝났어요. 오케이?”

“사제미. 당신은 너무 해요.”

“하나도 너무 안해요 ㅎㅎㅎ. 체시로. 곧 어두워지기 시작합니다. 어둡기 전에 최소한 지도상에 나타난 153번도로를 찾아야 합니다. 그 도로는 이글 마운틴의 아랫부분입니다. 어서 출발합시다.”

그랜드 마리아스(Grand Marias)를 들어서자 우측으로 난 건 플린트트 레일 도로를 찾았고 우리는 계속 달렸다.

“사제미. 저 앞에 보이는 산이 이글 마운틴(Eagle Mountain) 같아요.”

“맞을 겁니다. 그러나 보기 보다는 멀리 있어요. 우리는 아마도 153번 도로를 찾으면 적당한 곳에서 야영을 하여야할 것입니다. 우리가 폭파시킨 그 드론 이후로 지금까지 하늘과 도로에 별 추적 기색이 없는 걸로 봐서그들에게 우리는 움직이고 있다는 사실 하나만으로 연구대상이 되었을 걸로 생각합니다. 이 밤에 적외선 건을 장착한 드론을 띄운다든가 아니면 내일 아침 다시 이 구역을 수색한다 든지…”

“쟈스틴의 말로는, 포언드부류(4ONW-forOur New World 딥 월드 조직)는 거대 공산당 조직과 추구하는 목표를 연계하고 있으며, 그 공산당은 은밀하게 일대일로(一帶一路 One Belt and One Road, OBOR)의 연결망을 거의 전체 지구안의 나라에 만들어 두고 있으며그들 조직이 Cherry picking(선별)를 할 거라고하였어요. 그들은 이미 광자웨이브 바이러스(Virus On LightWaves-코로나 바이러스-19x로 전세계가 휘청거릴 때,제2의 브레인 바이러스 Brain Virus 즉큐잌스를 광자의 공기속에 흩뿌려 인간멸절을 위한 웨이브를 다시 전세계에 전파하고 있다.)로 지구를 점령한 상태라고 하였어요. 저는 그들이 우리의 존재가치를 인정하고 있든가? 아니면 방치해도 될 정도이다 라 고 둘 중에 하나를 결정했을 것 같아요. 그러나 우리는 G90에 가깝게 접근하였어요. 그런데… 평화로운 마을같이 조용해요. 모두들 죽었을까요?”

그녀는 내 말에 다시 컴퓨터 화면을 보았다.

“맞아요. 저 앞에 153번 도로가 있어야 하는데…”

“적당한 곳에서 야영을 하고 아침에 산을 오르도록 하는게 좋을 것입니다. 오케이?”

우리는 불안하지만, 야영을 할 수밖에는 방법이 없었다. 비 포장길인 153번 도로에서 우회전하여 2km쯤 더 나아갔지만, 숲이 우거져 마땅한 공터를 찾기 어려웠고 야간이라서 로칼 도로의 산속에서 더 이상 차로 올라갈 수 없었다. 그때, 좌측으로 난 작은 길을 발견하였다. 승용차 한대 반 정도 넓이의 숲에 가려진 아주 작은 길이었다. 그길 밑으로는 타원형의 하수구가 있었다. 산 위에서 좁은 길을 따라 내려오는 작은 물을 산 아래로 흘러내려 보내는 물길이었다.

“체시로. 여기 작은 길이 있는데, 이곳 입구에 주차하고 야영합니다. 어두워 더 전진할 수가 없어요.”

나는 대답을 듣지 않고 차를 좌측 길로 좌회전하여 천천히 들어갔다. 길이 좁아서 더 가서는 필요할 때 차를 돌리기는 어려울 것 같았다. 입구에 주차하는 것이 가장 좋다고 생각했다. 길 우측 옆으로 바짝 붙여 주차하였다.

연 말이 되니 별 보잘 것 없는 일이지만, 바빠서 퇴고 없이 글만 올리고
나가게 된다. 일이 바쁘면 땀을 많이 흘리고 집에 돌아오면 긴장이 풀려 더 피곤해
진다. 영어 소설은 우리 손녀 크로이가 자라서 능력이 될 때 다시 영어 소설로
살려주길 기대하며 같이 쓴다. 죽은 자는 그냥 무 이지만, 산 사람들에게는 뭔가
동기를 부여해야 될 것 같아서 이다.
