누군가가 명상을 하고 있다.

미국에 사는 인도인 형제가 다니러 온 것이다. 왼쪽 두번째 여성이 그 사진속의 주인공.
필자의 순례에 많은 관심을 가진 오른쪽 청년은 2월의 네팔순례때 참여하겠다고 한다.
Indian brothers who live in U.S. came to visit Auroville. The woman, the second person from the left, is the heroine of the picture. The man in the picture is very interested in my pilgrimage. He told me that he would join the pilgrimage in Nepal course.
주인장 Kireet씨는 아침이면 10시까지 정원을 손질한다.
The owner, Mr. Kireet, cares for the garden in the morning until 10 o'clock.
그에게 오로빌의 물관리에 대해 물어 보았다. 그는 젊은 시절부터 오로빌의 홍수방지와 보 정비에 많은 노력을 기울였다.
I asked Mr. Kireet about the water management of Auroville. He has worked for the prevention of flood and reparing the dikes since he joined Auroville.

아열대지방인 이곳은 우기의 집중강우시 홍수예방이 중요한 과제다.
태국의 평탄지형 물관리의 어려움을 관찰했던 필자로서는 오로빌과 같은 비슷한 기후의 평탄지형에서의 생태마을 조성시 물관리가 궁금했던 것이다.
그의 설명으로는 해안에서 직선거리 5km인 오로빌의 중심부가 해발 52미터로서 비교적 경사가 있어서 다른 평야보다는 좋은 조건에 있다고 한다. 그럼에도 폭우가 쏟아질 경우 점토질의 토양이 분포하고 있는 곳은 지하침투가 느려서 강물로 흘려보내는 시간이 걸리므로 담아둘 보관공간이 필요하다는 것이다. 그래서 사진처럼 수십군데의 인공계곡 Canyon을 만들어서 서서히 방류하도록 했다는 것이다.

The sub-tropical weather make the flood prevention a very important project during rainy season.
I have already investigated the water management in flat land of Thailand. I was curious about the water management of eco-village such as Auroville which is located at flat land.
According to his explanation, the cener of Auroville is located at 52 meter in altitude.
The land has a slight slpe, and it works as an advantage in water management of Auroville, compared to other flat land. However, clayish soil in some areas makes the infiltration of water slow. And it takes time for the flood water to reach the river. They need space to store flood water temporarily. They built dozens of man-made canyons seen in thepicture in order to make the flood water flow slowly.

서부지역은 커다란 담수호가 있다.
The yellow line in the map picture is stream. Auroville is divided into three watersheds. The central area is located in relatively safe place. In the western area, there is a large reservoir.

이 숙소는 모든 건물이 두뼘폭의 수로로 둘러쳐 있다. 수시로 내리는 빗물을 담아두는데 넘치기전에 마당에 묻어놓은 커다란 지하저수조에 저류된다. 그 물은 가물었을 때 정원수로 쓰인다.
The shelter is surrounded by water ways which has two-span width. When it rains heavy, the rainwater flows into underground tank before the water way overflows. The water stored in underground tank is used for watering the plants of the garden during drought time.
이 작은 둘레연못에는 정화효과가 큰 수초가 심어져 있고 작은 민물고기가 헤엄쳐 다닌다. 모기들이 알을 낳는 즉시 물고기밥이 된다. 그래서인지 이 집은 모기가 거의 없다.
무엇보다 사방에 넘치는 개미들이 이 집에 침투하다가는 이 물에 빠지게 된다.
We can find large aquatic plants and small fishes in the small pond surrounding the shelter.
As soon as the mosquitoes lay eggs in the pond, the fish eat the eggs. For that reason, I could not find mosquitoes in this house. Moreover the ants which are commonly found in this area can's cross the surrounding pond of the shelter.

이 물에는 무독성의 물뱀도 꽤 있어서 시끄럽게 우는 개구리를 호시탐탐 노리고 있다. 멋지고도 긴장된 생태환경이다.
Many kinds of crucian carp are waiting for the prey to fall into the pond.
In the waterway, we can find harmless water snake which is aiming at frogs.
It was a very harmonious and stressful ecosystem.
오로빌의 유명한 Solar Kitchen 으로 갔다. 불행히도 오늘은 볼 수 없다고 한다. 대신 사진들을 소개한다.
I went to the famous Solar Kitchen in Auroville. But the guide said it was closed today. Instead, the guide showed me some pictures.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama visited Auroville too.
사무실의 티벳인 직원에게 필자의 순례소식을 전하였다.
내년 5월에 다람살라에 무사히 도착한다면,
달라이라마 성하께 인사를 드리고 싶다는 뜻과 함께~
I told the Tibetan staff in the office about the pilgrimage.
I said "I would like to pay tribute to His Holiness the Dalai Lama if I arrive at Dharamsala in May next year."
오로빌 본부건물에 가서 여러 정보를 살펴보았다.
I went to the headquarter of Auroville, and investigated various informations about Auroville
명상센터를 중심으로 은하수 모양을 형상화 한 오로빌은 전체적으로 마을의 토지이용의 밀도가 낮다. 계획인구 5만인데 아직 3천명밖에 안 모였으니 그럴만도 하다.
시작한지 반세기가 가깝도록 그런 현실이라면 계획수정이 필요할지도 모르겠다.
지금과 같은 밀도라면 비용부담이 너무 커서 인프라 정비가 더딜 수밖에 없다.
그 때문에 보행이 위축되어서
커뮤니티의 긴밀도가 떨어지는 등 나타나는 부작용이 더 크다.
앞으로 인구계획과 토지이용계획이 어떻게 전개될지 주목된다.
Auroville, which takes after the Galaxy form, has a very low density of land utilization as a whole.
The planned population of Auroville was 50,000 people. However, it has a population of 3000 people as of now. They may need to change the original plan because the population increase has been so slow during 50 years. Such a low density of population makes the maintenance cost of infrastructure high. The repairing cost is so high that walking within the community is frustrated.
Another side effect is that the closeness within comminity is getting hurt.
I would like to see how they resolve such problems arising from the conflict betwen population plan and land use plan.
오로빌의 도서관.
아주 좋은 공간이다.
여기를 중심으로 한 커뮤니티의 활성화를 꾀한 것이 초기의 계획인듯 한데 아쉽게도 아직 이르지 못하고 있는 것 같다.
The library in Auroville provides a nice space. The original plan probably aimed for activation of Auroville starting from the library. However, it seems to me that they cound not reach the aim.
한글판 책도 십년전쯤에 나와서 도서관에 비치되어 있다.
The introduction of Auroville in Korean language was published about 10 years ago.
I could find the Korean book in the library.
오로빌의 헌장과 정신을 소개한 글이다.
The Korean book introduced the charter of Auroville, and the spirit of Auroville.

I could see the Hindu ritual in a village on the way back to shelter.

I walked back to shelter.
I could see a calf sucking milk of a cow. It was a very nice looking.
그 전날 약속한 Mr. R.Rajendran 씨의 사무실에서 인터뷰를 했다.
단순한 대담인줄 알았는데 영상촬영을 한다. 필자의 빈약한 영어실력이 그대로 드러나게 되었다.
45분짜리 유투브 영상물을 만들었길래 5분짜리로 줄여달라고 했다.
I had an inverview at the office of Mr. R. Rajendran.
The interview was appointed at the previous day.
I expected an interview just for recording. But he tried a video interview.
My poor English was exposed to video camera.
I asked him to shorten the interview for 5 minutes.
