날란다 사원에서 부터 대도시 파트나까지는 마을들을 가로지르는 길을 포함하여 최단코스로 가기로 했다.
사흘동안 60여km. 하라상은 완쾌되었지만 하루 더 쉬고 내일부터 걷기로 했다.
From Nalanda temple to Patna, I decided to take the shortest course passing through villages.
It will take three days to walk 60 km.
Though Mr. Hara recovered his condition, he would rest one more day.
He will start to walk tomorrow.

마을을 지나는데 담벼락 가득히 소똥연료를 말리고 있다.
While I was passing by a village, they were drying cattle dung spread on the wall for fuel.
잘 생긴 나무아래 소들을 먹일 볏짚이 풍요로워 보인다.
Bunches of rice straw which were piled up under a stately tree looked affluent.
오래된 마을에서 하수로를 정비하고 있다. 마을정비의 첫째는 물순환이다. 평지의 물관리는 쉽지 않은 문제다.
이 마을은 그래도 의사결정이 잘 이루어진 모양이다.
People in old village were repairing sewage.
The first thing to do in village improvement project is water management.
The water management in flat land is not easy.
Probably, the people in this village have succeeded in decision making.
습지화 된 논바닥에 새들이 모여있다.
Birds flocked in rice paddies which was turned into wetlands.
먹을 게 많은 모양이다.
Food for the birds are plenty, I guess.
겨울의 농촌은 벽돌찍기가 큰 부업이다. 대부분의 건물은 흙벽돌로 짓는다.
Side job of villagers in winter time is to make bricks.
Most buildings in this area were built with earthen bricks.
점토성분의 흙이 많다. 이런 흙을 벽돌모양으로 찍은 다음, 햇볕에 잘 말려 두었다가, 불을 피워 구워낸다.
동네마다 벽돌굽는 굴뚝이 보일 정도다.
The soil has plenty of clay ingredient. The soil in this picture is molded into brick-shape.
They dry and burn the brick-shapes. Every village has a brick factory with chimney.

한참을 걸어서 어느 한적한 시골길로 접어들었다.
After a while, I entered a quiet village.
혼자 걷고 있는데 마을의 청소년들 네 명이 자전거를 몰면서 다가와서 돈을 구걸한다.
그동안 외국관광객이 많은 비하르지역에 들어와서 구걸하는 아이들을 자주 보았다.
하지만 개별적인 적선은 금물이라는 생각을 실천해온 편이다.
비하르지방은 그동안 관광객들이 잘못 해온 것이, 멀쩡하게 보이는 어른들도 구걸행위를 하는 것이다. 잘못된 관행이 습관화되었다.
I was walking alone.
Four youths riding bicycle came to me and begged for money.
For the past several days, I saw begging children in Vihar region
where there were many foreign tourists.
However, I thought that individual almsgiving is not good.
And I have practiced no-almsgiving so far.
The tourists have done wrong-doing as far as almsgiving is concerned, and even adults are begging for money.
Wrong-doings have been repeated and became customary.
여하간, 이때 필자는 위기를 느꼈다.
혼자 걷고 있는 시골길에서
이런 식의 구걸은 순식간에 강도로 돌변할 수도 있다.
그들은 겁없는 나이들이다.
잘못하면 물리적 충돌이 발생할 수도 있다.
필자는 곧바로 걸음을 멈추고
잠시나마 그들과 거리를 두었다.
때마침 되돌아가는 방향으로 지나가는 오토릭샤가 있어서 세우고 올라탔다.
그리고 마을을 멀리 돌아가는 버스로 이동하기로 했다.
Anyway, I felt danger at that moment.
Since I was alone in quiet village road, the youths may change to robbers.
They are young and fearless.
All of a sudden, physical collision may take place.
I stopped walking and kept a distance from the youths.
At that time, I found a ricksha going opposite to my course.
I got on the ricksha. I decided to ride a bus detouring the village.
생각해보면 위험한 순간이었다.
It was a dangerous moment for the first time.
멀리 돌아가는 코스는 버스를 몇번인가 갈아타야 한다.
버스가 서는 큰 마을 장터의 모습.
I had to transfer detouring bus several times.
This is the appearance of market in the village where the bus stops.
장터에서 만난 아이들.
I met people in the market place.
사설학원이다. 선생님이 열심히 가르치고 있다.
문이 따로 없이 벽체가 개방되어 있어서 지나가는 사람도 들여다 볼 수 있다.
Private tutoring. The teacher is working hard.
There was no door in the institution. Passers-by could look into the inside.
필자가 사진을 찍으려니, 학생들이 외국인임을 알아보고 웅성거리며 뒤돌아본다.
필자가 수업방해를 한 것 같다.

농촌에는 중요한 기계다.
아직도 사람이 직접 볏단을 두들겨서 탈곡하는 현장도 많다. 그런 곳에는 요긴한 기계다.

I saw several places where people were threshing manually.

파트나의 숙소로 가는 버스를 탔는데, 좁은 공간을 2개층으로 꾸며 놓은 버스다.
I rode on a bus going back to shelter in Patna.
Amazingly, the bus had two stories in narrow space.
차장의 안내로 2층침대칸으로 올라가서 한 컷.
The conductor guided me to upstairs. This is my sleeping-seat in unpstairs.
