An Impersonal City
The notion that the matrix city (and those living in it) don't have a distinct identity/personality is carried throughout the movie. After all, it was created by the machines and is simply a computer simulation.
Everywhere in the movie the word "City" is used in place of the name of the actual city: City Waste, Heart O' The City Hotel, City Phone, etc.
Note the name of the agents--Brown, Jones, and Smith. These are the three most common last names in the United States.
Morpheus: "And you are?" Smith: "A Smith. Agent Smith." Morpheus: "You all look the same to me."
According to "The Secret Language Of Dreams," "A large, impersonal city may suggest that the dreamer has many acquaintances but few close friends and the dream may be offering coded advice about the need to establish more intimate relationships."
Taking this one step further, this may suggest that the city of the matrix is cold and impersonal because the people living in it are not relating to each other on a "real" level.
Trinity brings up the issue of Neo not connecting with others well in the matrix. Walking up to Neo, who is standing alone, away from others in crowded club, she tells him, "I know why you hardly sleep, why you live alone, and why night after night you sit at your computer."
This sense of isolation is also present in Neo's office where all the cubicles are small, isolated, and lack any sense of personality or individuality (just like matrix pods that the humans live in).
The use of two empty, abandoned hotels in the movie also yields to this concept of an "impersonal city." In "The Secret Language of Dreams," it says that "hotels represent impermance, a point of transition in a relationship or a shift or even a loss of personal identity. They may also suggest the price that has to be paid to sustain a relationship."
Interestingly enough, there are many sacrifices in the movie as characters die or risk their lives to save others.
Furthermore, all those that leave the matrix suffer a loss of personal identity as they try to determine who they are and find that "the matrix can not tell you who you are."
The use of very tall buildings in this "impersonal city" is also symbolic. They represent power and the machines supremacy over humans in the matrix. As Agent Smith told Morpheus, "Have you ever stood and stared at it, marveled at it beauty, its genius?"

"The Secret Language Of Dreams"에서는 이름 없는 도시는 꿈꾸는 사람이 익숙한 곳이지만 친한 사람이 별로 없으며 더 많은 친교를 가질 필요성이 있다는 암시라고 한다. 이 해설을 영화에 대입해 보면, 매트릭스의 도시가 차갑고 몰개성적인 이유는 그 안에 있는 사람들의 생활이 진짜가 아니기 때문이라고 할 수 있다. 나이트클럽에서 트리니티는 사람들과 어울리지 않고 외톨이처럼 있는 네오에게 말한다. "네가 뭘 했으며 왜 잠을 못 자고 혼자 살며 밤이면 밤마다 왜 컴퓨터 앞에 앉는 지도..." 이런 고립된 느낌은 네오의 사무실에서도 느낄 수 있다. 모든 사무실 칸이 작고 고립되어 있고 개성이 없다. 발전소에 꽂힌 인간의 현실과 상통하는 일이다.
영화에는 낡고 인적없는 호텔 2 곳이 나오는데 역시 impersonal city란 개념을 나타낸다. "The Secret Language of Dreams"에서 호텔은 영토(impermance)란 의미로서 거래와 만남이 이루어지는 곳이고 정체성을 얻거나 잃을 수도 있는 곳이라고 설명한다. 영화에서는 호텔에서 사람들이 만나기 위해 치르는 대가를 의미하는 듯하다. 사람들이 죽거나 위기에 놓이는 일이 많이 발생한다. 또한 매트릭스에서 깨어난 사람은 자신이 누군지 알려고 하지만 매트릭스는 자신이 누군지 알려줄 수 없기 때문에 정체성에 심한 곤란을 겪는다.
(역자 참고) 실제로 영화를 촬영한 도시는 시드니이다. 그러나 컴퓨터 조작으로 전혀 시드니와 닮지 않은 실제와 다른 모습의 배경이 되도록 함으로써 an impersonal ciyt가 되었다. 하지만 많은 곳에서 Wachowski 형제의 고향인 시카고인 점이 드러난다. 영화에 나오는 거리 이름은 모두 시카고이다.
