Garbage/Run Down, Dirty City
Garbage, as well as the run down, abandoned buildings in the matrix, are a reminder of the fact that the real world has been nearly destroyed by war.
Garbage is also representative of the state of the humans in the matrix pods. They are simply discarded as trash (into a sewer) by the machines when they have fulfilled their purpose.
The references to garbage and decay also serve as forshadowing that the matrix world is one that needs much reforming or change.
We see trash around the apartment building Neo enters when he is running away from the agents.
While escaping that same building, Neo jumps into a pile of garbage.
Trinity is nearly run down by a City Garbage truck.
As Agent Smith points out, Neo helps his landlady take out her garbage.
In the subway scene, we see a lot of trash blowing around.
Cypher throws his cell phone into a garbage can.
The old TV repair shop seems to be closed or not longer open to the public.
The rooms in The Heart O' The City Hotel and Lafayette Hotel are vacant, dusty, dirty, and seedy looking.
The building where the Oracle is staying is run down and there is graffiti all over the walls. There is a homeless blind man in the hallway.
The subway is vacant except for one homeless man. There is trash blowing around, graffiti on the walls, and appears unkept. While fighing, Agent Smith and Neo get dust all over them.
The matrix world (with its garbage and the decay) is also symbolic of the machines who created it and control it; it is a representive of their evilness.
In the book, "Understanding The Dreams You Dream" by Ira Milligan, it states that sewage and garbage are symbolic of corruption, filthiness, sin, evil, corrupt authority and abuse of authority.
