Matrix Pods
In the movie, the matrix pods containing the humans were symbolic of a woman's womb. When Neo was flushed out of his pod, it was as if he was being born.
Etymologically speaking, the word "matrix" refers to a "female animal kept for breeding." It comes from the latin word "mater"--mother.
Interestingly, the Wachowski brothers had this to say about the meaning of the word "Matrix": "Like the movie itself, there is a lot of word play, a lot of hidden other meanings, a lot of multiple meanings. Besides that, we also like the definition, the mathematic definition of the use of matrix, or the use of it in terms of the woman's womb."
The matrix pods were also compared to a prison cell. This is a very accurate analogy since a prison refers to "any place of confinement or involuntary restraint."
In addition, the pods are also compared to an institution of bondage or slavery, where the slaves are unknowingly "bound by or subjected to some external power or control." In this case, it is the machines who are in control.
Morpheus: "Like everyone else you were born into bondage, born into a prison that you can not smell or taste or touch. A prison for your mind."
Morpheus: "What is the matrix? Control. The matrix is a computer generated dream world built to keep us under control in order to change a human being into this [a source of electrical power]."
When Neo is running from the agents and ends up in the apartment with two elderly people in it, we a television in the living room. For a split second, we see a man on the screen. It is a clip from an episode called "The Prisoner."
Life inside the matrix is also refered to as a prison.
Agent Smith: "I hate this place, this zoo, this prison, this reality, whatever you want to call it."
The small, identical, and isolated cubicles of Neo's office building were a foreshadowing as well as a symbol of the matrix pods (small prison cells) in which Neo and his fellow co-workers were actually living in at the time.

(Like the movie itself, there is a lot of word play, a lot of hidden other meanings, a lot of multiple meanings. Besides that, we also like the definition, the mathematic definition of the use of matrix, or the use of it in terms of the woman's womb.)"
